The TBA Disability Law Section will holds its 2021 Forum virtually on Oct. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT. The program will cover a variety of topics applicable to disability law practitioners, including a DDS update, how to prepare for a successful grid case, plus tips and tricks on how to enhance your disability law practice both online and in person. The TBA Litigation Law Section now will offer its annual forum virtually on Sept. 16. The program, produced by Todd Presnell with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in Nashville, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT and offer four general CLE credits. Speakers include Tennessee Supreme Court justices Holly Kirby, Sharon Lee and Roger A. Page; Tennessee Court of Appeals Judge W. McBrayer; 30th Judicial District Chancellor Gadson “Will” Perry; and former TBA president and Baker Donelson shareholder George T. “Buck” Lewis III.

While day-to-day practice for lawyers may have changed during the pandemic, ethical and professional obligations to clients, opposing counsel and the state bar generally have remained the same. Tennessee veterans are underrepresented in the Veterans Affairs’ Department (VA) claims and appeals process, but a new three-hour CLE set for Aug. 12 is designed to encourage VA accreditation. The live virtual program will cover representation before the VA, claims procedures, benefits eligibility, right to appeal, disability compensation, dependency, indemnity compensation and pension benefits. Speakers include James R. Drysdale with the VA Office of General Counsel in Washington, D.C.

Halkett will discuss an article he penned for the Tennessee Bar Journal’s January/February 2021 issue titled, Mental Health in the Legal Profession: A Crisis, a Case Study and a Call to Action. During the program, he’ll discuss his mental health journey, offer personal insights into mental health problems and give a message of hope for others in the legal profession who are facing their own mental health challenges.
