This year’s Tennessee Supreme Court Boot Camp will kick off tomorrow morning with the addition of two special elements. As in past years, attendees will observe oral arguments in real cases and then engage in a discussion about the preparation and considerations for deciding to seek review in the court. But this year, attendees also are invited to see Justice Holly Kirby sworn in as the court’s newest chief justice prior to the CLE at the state capitol, and then hear former TBA president Bill Harbison present a special program on the history of the court at Holland & Knight after the Boot Camp. The TBA's Boot Camp program will kick off at 9:30 a.m. CDT at the Tennessee Supreme Court building in Nashville with oral arguments before the full court. An analysis and discussion will follow with Miller & Martin's Robert Parsley and Nashville lawyers Donald Capparella of Dodson Parker Behm & Capparella and Edmund Sauer with Bradley Arant Boult Cummings. The program will wrap up at 4:30 p.m. CDT.

Join us Oct. 16 for a CLE webcast discussion on the emerging legal issues around firearms. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Special Agent Thomas Waggoner and Knoxville-based Assistant U.S. Attorney Brent Jones will discuss issues associated with legal gun ownership in America and the federal regulation of firearms. Waggoner also will discuss the types of cases ATF investigates. For the second portion of the webcast, Louisville attorneys Jason Todd Hardin and J. Allen Cobb will discuss their successful appeal at the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in blocking a nationwide prohibition on bump stocks. Make plans now to join colleagues on Nov. 30 for the second annual "Raising the Bar" program. Produced by the TBA Women in the Profession Committee, this year’s program will focus on advocating for one’s own and others’ career growth. Sessions will cover how to effectively solicit raises and project assignments, receive credit for work done, and make partner. A second session will explore the barriers impacting diverse women in the legal industry and best practices for overcoming those challenges. And for those on the back end of their career, the program will wrap up with a session on the financial aspects of preparing for retirement and maintaining work-life balance while transitioning to retirement. A networking reception will follow the program from 4:15-6 p.m. CST.

The TBA’s Animal Law Section held its Annual Forum on Friday at the Nashville Zoo. Attendees heard from experts on issues affecting veterinary clinics and topics related to pets in divorce, regulation and training of service and therapy animals, and bird law. Stephanie White with the zoo’s Behavioral Husbandry Department presented a “Meet and Greet” with two of the zoo’s residents — a python and owl — and attendees met Finn, a therapy dog for Davidson County Juvenile Court, and Luna, a service dog in training for Retrieving Independence. The TBA’s annual Health Law Primer is an introductory program that provides an opportunity for newer associates to learn more about the health law practice area or for more seasoned lawyers to brush up on the essentials of a health law practice. This year's event is taking place Nov. 1 from noon to 4:30 p.m. CDT at the Nashville office of Bass, Berry & Sims. Topics to be covered include an introduction to the U.S. health care system, the basics of fraud and abuse, and a look at provider licensure, employment and contracting.

Registration is now open for the TBA's Law & Culture in Ireland CLE program scheduled for May 2024. Two travel options are available: a four-night trip to Dublin and a six-night trip to Dublin and Belfast. In conjunction with CLE Abroad, travelers will engage with local experts, academics, officials and change makers who will offer in-depth commentary on the EU and UK legal-political systems, economics, environmental justice, history and religion. In Dublin, the group also will explore ancient castles, visit landmarks, museums and notable legal institutions, and sample local cuisine. In Belfast, travelers will learn about the region's unique political history, Good Friday Agreement, ongoing reconciliation efforts and peace process. This year's Disability Law Forum is returning as a live and in-person program on Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT at the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club in Hendersonville. Sessions will cover ways to prepare a successful GRID case, best practices from a vocational expert, a DDS/OHO update and an ethics course designed to help "unstick" stuck cases. A happy hour will immediately follow the program.

TBA's Corporate Counsel Section will host two webinars this fall. The first, "Cybersecurity and Data Privacy: Regulations, Cyber Threats, and AI — Key Issues that Lawyers Must Understand" will take place Oct. 13 at noon CDT. The webinar will focus on data privacy and cybersecurity issues and the complex challenges that lawyers must understand to effectively represent their clients. Please join Baker Donelson attorneys Matt White and Alex Koskey for a discussion on critical legal and risk management considerations regarding the cyber threat landscape. The second webinar is scheduled for Dec. 7 at noon CST. Laura Chastain, ethics counsel for the Board of Professional Responsibility (BPR), will discuss the BPR's Formal Ethics Opinion 2022-F-168 regarding in-house counsel that reside and are licensed in other states.
