Tennessee Bar Journal editor Suzanne Craig Robertson has recently been elected to serve on the governing council for the National Association of Bar Executives’ Communications Section. Robertson has been active in the organization for a number of years, presenting on best practices and trends at annual conferences, serving as a mentor for communicators at other bars and collecting a number of top awards for the Journal and other TBA publications. She will serve a two-year term in the position.

The Tennessee Bar Association is now accepting nominations for consideration for its first ever Fourth Estate Award, created to honor “courageous reporting on justice and the law.” The winner will be a journalist or journalists from newspapers, TV, radio, digital media, book publishing or social media who have shown courage in exercising First Amendment rights in the promotion of public understanding of how the law and our legal system works. The deadline for submissions is May 10.

After their first meeting in January was cancelled due to inclement weather, Diversity Leadership Institute class members met for the first time in Nashville this week. This year’s class includes four students from Nashville School of Law, three from Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, six from the University of Tennessee College of Law, six from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, one from Belmont University School of Law and one from Vanderbilt Law. The class will participate in a service project tomorrow, and will reconvene in June alongside the Tennessee Bar Association annual convention in Memphis.

Kathy Prescott will retire from TBA as Membership Director on Friday, March 2. Prescott has served in this role since May 2015 and has provided leadership and direction on all issues affecting TBA members including the membership renewal campaign, member benefits and law school outreach. Current CLE Director Mindy Fulks will be replacing Prescott as Membership Director in the upcoming months. TBA is currently searching for a new Director of Education and Professional Development to serve as a replacement for Fulks.

The TBA welcomes two new additions to the staff this month. Berkley Schwarz joins the TBA as Director of Public Policy and Government Affairs. She previously worked at the Tennessee Secretary of State’s Division of Business Services, where she was an attorney for the division and Athlete Agent Registrar. She is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law. Stephanie Vonnahme was named the new Young Lawyers Division and Public Education Coordinator. Vonnahme comes to the TBA from a nonprofit background, where she has provided executive director services for a variety of organizations. She holds a master’s degree from Murray State University. The TBA's Young Lawyers Division was selected by the American Bar Association's YLD as the Affiliate Star of the Quarter, in recognition of its expungement clinic project. The TBA YLD was recognized at the YLD Council meeting on Friday at the ABA Midyear Meeting in Vancouver. It will also be featured in the February edition of The Affiliate, the ABA Young Lawyers Division’s digital publication.

The TBA announced today that 30 attorneys from across the state have been selected for its 2018 Leadership Law program. Now in its 15th year, Leadership Law is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. The class will meet for its first session in January, and then spend the next six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service. The TBA today hosted two workshops with information, advice and encouragement for attorneys interested in running for local public office. The events, held in Jackson and Columbia, featured local elected officials sharing their experiences from the campaign trail and beyond. Jackson’s workshop featured Lexington City School Board member Chad Wood and City Council member Scott Conger as guest speakers, with TBA Communications Coordinator Katharine Heriges as the panel moderator and presenter. In Columbia, TBA Young Lawyers Division President-elect Christian Barker served as the moderator to a panel featuring Maury County School Board member Kristin Parker and Spring Hill City Alderman Kevin Gavigan.
