In accordance with Article 47 of the TBA Bylaws, an open position will be filled by the Tennessee Board of Governors at its meeting on June 15. The current holder of the Second District Governor seat, Shelly Wilson, resigned the seat because of her acceptance of the position of Secretary for the upcoming bar year. The Second District represents Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Cumberland, Knox, Loudon, Morgan, Roane, Scott and Union counties. If you would like to be considered for this position, contact TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson in writing with your interest by June 1. Please include a resume with your submission.

TBA Executive Director Joycelyn Stevenson has been elected to the governing board of the National Association of Bar Executives. Stevenson, a Vanderbilt Law grad, worked in private practice for 16 years before taking on the leadership role at the Tennessee Bar Association in 2017. She will take her seat on the board at the group’s upcoming annual meeting in San Francisco and serve a two-year term.

A delegation of eight lawyers from Tennessee are representing the state during this year’s ABA Day on the Hill events. Today’s visits included meetings with U.S. Reps. David Kustoff, Scott DesJarlais, Steve Cohen and Tim Burchett, as well as Sen. Lamar Alexander. The delegation will meet with Sen. Marsha Blackburn on Thursday. The main topics for discussion are increased funding for the Legal Services Corporation and maintaining the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Today’s agenda also included a presentation by Kirsten Jacobson on her own connection to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and the important work of the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services.

The TBA election results are in and Sherie Edwards of Brentwood was elected Vice President. She will ascend to President-elect in 2020 and lead the organization as President for the 2021-2022 bar year. The following candidates also won their respective races: Rachel Moses, Governor, Fourth District; Trey Thatcher, West Grand Division Governor, Position 2; and Jamie Durrett, Middle Grand Division Governor, Position 2.

Maury County's Agathos Classical School again claimed the championship title at the Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Competition this weekend in Nashville. Agathos sent two teams to the state competition this year, and its "Team G" was the winning squad. Harpeth Hall of Nashville met Agathos in the final round and took home the second place trophy. Supreme Court Justice Cornelia A. Clark presided over the final round. The competition is put on each year by the TBA Young Lawyers Division. Fourteen teams from across the state took part this year.

The deadline to apply for the inaugural Reporters Workshop is fast approaching. The Tennessee Bar Association, its Communications Law Section and the Tennessee Association of Broadcasters launched the program, which is scheduled to take place in Nashville on May 17-18. Twelve print, online, television, and/or radio journalists will be selected to complete the training, which will focus on access to government information, defamation and privacy concerns in reporting, and other timely topics. Applications are due March 29. For additional information, contact TBA program coordinator Jennifer Vossler.

The Tennessee Bar Association has opened the nomination period for the second annual Fourth Estate Award, which honors courageous reporting on justice and the law. Nominees must be Tennessee-based journalists who have shown exemplary courage in exercising First Amendment rights in the promotion of public understanding of how the law and our legal system works and how it should work as demonstrated by a story or series of related stories published in 2018. Nominations can be submitted on the TBA website and will be accepted until May 1.

All candidates with contested races in the 2019 Tennessee Bar Association election have been provided the opportunity of preparing a campaign message to members. Those messages were sent out yesterday by email to TBA members and are now also available on the TBA.org website. Voting will begin Friday and continue through April 1. All members should receive emails with voting instructions on Friday.

The TBA staff recently attended a Respect in the Workplace training led by TBA member Luther Wright Jr. from Ogletree Deakins. The training incorporated information from TBA’s newly revised policy handbook on discrimination and harassment as it relates to staff interaction with one another, contractors, vendors and also interaction with members.

In preparation for the upcoming TBA Elections, the profiles of all eight candidates in contested races will be separately emailed to the membership on Wednesday. Voting begins on Friday, and members should receive an email then with voting instructions. All members will be able to vote in the race for vice president, while those in the Board of Governors Fourth District, West Grand Division and Middle Grand Division will additionally be able to cast ballots for candidates to represent those areas. Ballots will come from the vote@electionsonline.com email address, so please check your spam filters if you do not receive a ballot notification. Members who timely requested paper ballots will receive them via U.S. Mail. Please feel free to reach out to elections@tnbar.org if you have any questions or concerns.
