Vanderbilt surgeon Manny Sethi is stepping down as head of Healthy Tennessee while concentrating on his bid for the U.S. Senate, The Tennessee Journal reports. Sethi’s wife, Maya, will assume his former duties as president and CEO of the organization, which provides free health fairs and organizes symposiums and candidate forums. Sethi is the only major Republican in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Lamar Alexander so far, though former U.S. Ambassador Bill Hagerty is expected to formally enter the race soon.

Eddie Mannis and Indya Kincannon will be squaring off in November to become the next mayor of Knoxville after the two bested a crowded field Tuesday night, Knoxnews reports. Mannis, a conservative businessman, earned 7,005 votes, while Kincannon, a former school board member and staffer to Mayor Madeline Rogero, earned 5,568 votes, just edging out at-large council member Marshall Stair.

A month after Republican Jamie Woodson said she was considering a run for U.S. Senate, the former state legislator said she is no longer weighing the option, the Tennessean reports. Woodson said she "had been hoping" that former Gov. Bill Haslam would seek the position, but he announced last month that he would not as well. President Donald Trump previously tweeted his support of Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty running for the position.

Former Shelby County Democratic Party chair Corey Strong is challenging U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen in the August 2020 Democratic Congressional primary, the Daily Memphian reports. Strong announced his candidacy today, one year to the day since Democratic candidates swept every countywide race in the 2018 county general elections and voters elected eight Democrats to the 13-member Shelby County Commission. As party chairman, Strong was instrumental in recruiting candidates and organizing the Democratic effort to reverse a similar Republican sweep in the 2010 and 2014 county elections.

Nashville voters will return to the polls on Sept. 12 for runoff elections to select a new mayor and several at-large and district council members, the Tennessean reports. In Thursday’s voting, Nashville lawyer and incumbent Mayor David Briley trailed challenger John Cooper by 10 percentage points. Another lawyer, Bob Mendes, was the only candidate to escape a runoff in the race for one of five at-large seats on the council. The next eight candidates from the 15-person field will duke it out for the four remaining seats.

Educational consultant Kimi Abernathy has launched a campaign for the state Senate seat currently held by Steven Dickerson, the last Nashville Republican in the state legislature, the Nashville Post reports. Abernathy said she was running in order to expand Medicaid, support public schools and protect the environment. Dickerson, who has positioned himself as a moderate, already has a Republican primary challenger in Brentwood business consultant Diane Michael, and has faced legal trouble for his pain clinic business.

Knoxville physician Josh Gapp is the latest Republican to announce his intent to run for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander’s seat in Congress, the Nashville Post reports. Gapp, a dermatopathologist in private practice, has aligned his platform with President Trump’s priorities, pledging to provide resources to the president to fight illegal immigration and aiming to fully fund a border wall. Gapp is the second Republican doctor to enter the race. Manny Sethi, a Nashville-based orthopedic surgeon, announced in June that he was seeking the Republican nomination for Senate. Though he has yet to declare, former Tennessee Economic Development Commissioner Bill Hagerty is the hypothetical frontrunner in the Republican primary thanks to an endorsement from President Trump.

Gov. Bill Lee said he will work to change a 1970s law forcing all governors to issue a proclamation honoring Nathan Bedford Forrest, NewsChannel5 reports. "While it is my job as governor to enforce the law, I want Tennesseans to know where my heart is on this issue. Our state’s history is rich, complex and in some cases painful. With this in mind, I will be working to change this law," Lee said. Tennessee law mandates that the governor must issue proclamations for six state holidays each year including days for Nathan Bedford Forrest and Robert E. Lee.

President Donald Trump announced Friday that U.S. Ambassador to Japan Bill Hagerty will run to be Tennessee's next U.S. Senator, the Tennessean reports. The president announced the move on Twitter, where he also endorsed Hagerty. It comes after Gov. Bill Haslam and U.S. Rep. Mark Green both announced this week that they would not seek to replace Sen. Lamar Alexander when he retires next year. Nashville orthopedic trauma surgeon Manny Sethi has already thrown his hat in the ring for the Republican nomination, while others, including U.S. Rep. David Kustoff and former state lawmaker Jamie Woodson, are also considering bids.

Former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and U.S. Rep. Mark Green both confirmed today that they would not seek the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate next year when current Sen. Lamar Alexander retires, the Tennessean reports. "While I think serving in the United States Senate would be a great privilege and responsibility, I have come to the conclusion that it is not my calling for the next period of my life," Haslam said. Green said he would be focusing his time on helping re-elect President Donald Trump and winning back GOP control of the House.
