 In a statement releasing details of funeral arrangements for former Tennessee Supreme Court justice Robert E. Cooper, Chief Justice Sharon Lee said, “Justice Cooper was highly respected by members of the judiciary and legal community. He diligently served this great state for nearly 40 years as a public servant.” The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at East Chapel Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Rd. in Chattanooga. Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Second Presbyterian Church of Chattanooga, 700 Pine St., with visitation in the church beginning at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, Second Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Chattanooga. The Tennessean has more on his life.

Ronald W. Jenkins of Johnson City died July 7 at the age of 65. A graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Jenkins served as assistant municipal judge for the town of Jonesborough and as staff attorney for the Washington County-Johnson City Emergency Medical Services. He was a Rule 31 mediator and member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, American Judges Association and Tennessee Municipal Judges Association. No visitation or funeral services will be held, but the Washington County Bar Association will hold a celebration of his career on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at its offices: West & Rose, 537 East Center St. in Kingsport. Judge Robert E. Cooper, who served a long tenure on the Tennessee Supreme Court, died Sunday at his home on Signal Mountain. He was 95. A native of Chattanooga, Cooper studied at the University of North Carolina and Vanderbilt University. He served as a Circuit Court judge in Hamilton County from 1953-1960 and on the Tennessee Court of Appeals from 1960-1974. Cooper was named to the Supreme Court in 1974 and served there until he retired in 1990. His son, Robert E. Cooper Jr., served as Tennessee attorney general from 2006 to 2014. Abner Mikva, a liberal stalwart from Illinois who served in all three branches of government and mentored a young Barack Obama died Monday at the age of 90. Mikva valued bipartisanship and friendship over politics even as he served in the Illinois General Assembly and U.S. House of Representative and as advisor to former president Bill Clinton, the Associated Press reports. Mikva also served on U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia for 15 years, the last four as chief judge. WRCB-TV has the story.

Murfreesboro lawyer David Wayne Kious died yesterday (June 28) at 67. He was a founding partner of two title companies as well as the law firm of Kious, Rodgers, Barger, Holder & Kious. A graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Kious was active in the Rutherford/Cannon County Bar Association and received many awards for his community involvement. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Joel Henry Moseley Sr. died June 18 in Hendersonville. He was 73. A native of Nashville, Moseley earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University Law School and began working for the Metropolitan Nashville Law Department as an attorney. He eventually became executive assistant to Mayor Beverly Briley, the first mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. Moseley transitioned to private practice in the 1970s and practiced law for many years with his college sweetheart, Alicia Susan Horton, at the law firm of Moseley & Moseley. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Madison. In lieu of flowers, donations to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson St., Nashville, TN 37203 are requested. Knoxville lawyer George Freeman “Buddy” Legg died Thursday (June 16) at 72. Legg grew up in Bristol and graduated from East Tennessee State University. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and earned his law degree in 1972 from the University of Tennessee. He later joined the law firm of Stone & Hinds, where he practiced for 42 years. Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Church Street United Methodist Church. A memorial service will follow at 6:15 p.m. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Knoxville attorney Robert Lee Vogel died Saturday (June 4), according to the Knoxville Bar Association. He was 56. Vogel graduated from Rutgers Law School and was licensed in Tennessee in 2004. The family will receive friends this evening from 5-7 p.m. at Berry Highland West Funeral Home, 9913 Sherrill Blvd. in Knoxville. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m.

Chiles graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law and began his legal practice in Kingsport in 1973, where he practiced for 40 years.
