Charles Henry McWherter, a former judge and prosecutor, died Oct. 16 at the age of 84. Funeral services were held yesterday in Dresden with a private burial following in the Palmersville Cemetery. McWherter was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Vanderbilt University Law School. He served in the U.S. Navy, as judge advocate for the Tennessee Department of the American Legion, and as commander and chaplain of the American Legion Post 55 in Martin. His legal service included stints as an assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee; assistant district attorney general in Henry, Benton, Carroll, Decatur and Hardin counties; and general sessions judge in Weakly County. The Paris Post-Intelligencer reported his death while the Bowlin Funeral Home has a more complete obituary.

James Alfred Anderson of Chattanooga died Sept. 26 at the age of 69. A graduate of the Nashville School of Law, Anderson opened his own law practice and later served as magistrate judge for Hamilton County and on the local election commission. Before becoming an attorney, he held a number of positions in government, including posts at the Department of Employment Security, Affirmative Action Commission, Metropolitan Work Incentive Program, TVA and Human Rights Commission of Chattanooga. Retired Colonel Leslie Webb Barham of Jackson died Sept. 30 at the age of 79. A graduate of the Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, he practiced law for many years in Jackson before taking the position of judge advocate general for the Tennessee Army National Guard headquarters in Nashville. He retired after 38 years of honorable service, after which he served as an administrative law judge for the state of Tennessee. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Jackson-Madison County Humane Society. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home, with military graveside services Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery. Read his obituary.

A celebration of the life of Kaaren Hirschowitz Engel, who died last week, will be Thursday at East Park, 700 Woodland St., Nashville, from 2 to 4 p.m. She was 55. A graduate of Emory University Law School, Engel practiced corporate health law before focusing her career on creative ventures. Memphis lawyer Kimberly Schuerman Smith died today (Oct. 4). She was 52. A 1990 graduate of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, Smith practiced law with Schuerman Smith & Associates PLLC. "She was a trailblazer,” former law partner Kreis White recalled. “She was a first chair female insurance defense lawyer long before many women tried many jury cases." Visitation will be Thursday at Collierville Funeral Home from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be at Collierville First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Knoxville lawyer John Albert Walker Jr. has died after a long illness. He was 75. A graduate of Columbia Law School, Walker served for many years with Walker & Walker in Knoxville, lectured at the Tennessee Law Institute for more than 40 years and served as president of the Knoxville Bar Association. A celebration of life will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral in Knoxville. Knoxnews has more on his life.

Robert C. Anderson, 64, died Saturday (Sept. 24) in Woodstock, Georgia. A graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Anderson served in the U.S. Air Force JAG Corps as an assistant district attorney in Fairbanks, Alaska, and as an assistant U.S. attorney in Nashville and Chattanooga. He spent 20 years with the Justice Department, retiring only because of his diagnosis of Multiple System Atrophy. A graveside service with military honors will take place tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. The Times Free Press has more on his life.

James Sjoberg “Jim” Webb, an attorney and former corporate executive, died in Cleveland Wednesday (Sept. 21) at 84. Webb worked in the legal department of Bowaters Southern Paper Corporation, as a partner in the law firm of Bell, Whitson, Painter & Webb, and as vice president and general counsel of Charleston Hosiery Mills. He served as Bradley County attorney for 25 years, retiring from that position to work full time in private practice. He was a past president and member of the board of directors of the Tennessee Counties Attorney’s Association. Visitation will take place tonight from 3-7 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with funeral services planned for Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, both in Cleveland. Knoxville lawyer Joe Robert Feagins, 43, died Tuesday (Sept. 20). Originally from Kingsport, Feagins earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law and began practicing law in 1999. He had been working as an attorney for Allstate Insurance since 2005. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home. Nicholas George “Nick” Demma of Jonesborough died Sept. 15 at the age of 77. Originally from Bristol, Demma worked as a police officer while earning his law degree from Stetson University in St. Petersburg, Florida. He worked as a trial lawyer in Tennessee, Florida and California until he retired in 2005. In lieu of flowers, the Demma family requests that friends volunteer their time at a local charity or youth organization in Nick’s name. The Johnson City Press has more on his life.
