Charles P. Jackson III, an attorney who practiced in Nashville and Chattanooga, died on Monday. He was 66. He earned his law degree at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1975. In addition to his work in the legal field, he was also noted for his business pursuits. Memorial gifts may be made to the Cora Mathews Horn Fund for Families via the Nashville Community Foundation. Services were held today at St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville.

Former Ducktown city attorney James V. “Jim” Johnstone died on March 7. He was 86. A New Jersey native, Johnstone lived and practiced in Blue Ridge, Georgia for many years after earning his law degree from the University of Miami. Over the years, he represented many underdog clients, including cases involving veterans, Native Americans, people with disabilities and laborers.

Former Nashville lawyer Sabin Rife Thompson died at his home in Sisal, Mexico, on Feb. 20. Thompson, a Vanderbilt Law School graduate, hails from Alabama, and had a long career practicing law in Nashville at Williams and Prochaska. In 1997, Thompson received the Nashville Bar Association’s Liberty Bell Award. Memorial arrangements in Nashville have not yet been finalized. The family requests memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Retired Judge Jerry Scott of Murfreesboro died Sunday evening. He was 75. Scott was a Vanderbilt Law graduate who served in the U.S. Air Force, where he worked in the Judge Advocate General’s Department and continued as a Military Reserve Judge. He went on to serve as a circuit judge in the 11th district, an appellate judge and as a senior judge for the state. A visitation will be held on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., followed by services at 5 p.m. at Belle Aire Baptist Church in Murfreesboro.

Larry Sutter, founder and partner of Sutter O’Connell, died on Monday. He was 53. His firm was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, and also had offices in Franklin, Tenn. Sutter was named by the Supreme Court of Ohio to the Board of Commissioners of Grievances and Discipline in 2013. He also was an adjunct professor at the University of Akron School of Law. Services for Sutter will take place at Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home in Ravenna, Ohio, with visitation on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and funeral service on Friday at 11 a.m.

Retired pediatrician and former Tennessee legislator Gene Caldwell of Oak Ridge died Saturday. He was 84. Caldwell hailed from Obion County and graduated from the University of Tennessee. He was a member of the U.S. Navy, achieveing the rank of lieutenant commander. After retiring from his pediatric practice, he ran for the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1996. He served three terms before retiring in 2002. In 2012, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by Gov. Bill Haslam for his work on behalf of children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton, 675 S. Charles Seivers Blvd.

Former Chancellor and state legislator Vernon Neal died on Friday. He was 85. Neal was a 1956 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law and enjoyed a long legal career in Cookeville. He was first elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1962 and was elected to state senate in 1966. He was elected as Chancellor of the 13th Judicial District in 1980, and served until 2005. The family will receive friends tonight at Cookeville First Baptist Church from 5 to 8 p.m. and again tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Funeral services will follow tomorrow at 11 a.m. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Cookeville First Baptist Church’s Operation Christmas Child: Samaritans’ Purse.

Percy Wilkins Jr. died on Friday in Nashville. He was 83. Wilkins, a native of North Carolina, served in the U.S. Air Force and found himself in Tennessee when he was assigned to Stewart Air Force Base in Smyra. He was married to his wife of 62 years on the NBC television show Bride and Groom, and in 1957 he accompanied troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to integrate Central High School. Wilkins practiced real estate law until his retirement in 2004. Visitation will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 2 p.m. Donations may be made to Alive Hospice, the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands or Conexion Americas.

Tennessee’s longest serving legislator Douglas Henry died yesterday in Nashville. He was 90. Henry, a conservative Democrat, was first elected to a House seat in 1954 and to the Senate in 1970. Educated at Vanderbilt Law, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. As a legislator, he spent many years as chair of the Senate’s Finance, Ways and Means Committee and was considered an “expert” on the state’s budget. Henry is remembered fondly by Democrats and Republicans alike, and was a mentor to many. “There will never be anybody else like Senator Henry in the Tennessee legislature,” Nashville attorney Bobby Thomas told the Tennessean. “He had no personal agenda and no personal ambition. He just wanted to do what all of our elected officials ought to do, and that's what's good for the public.” A public visitation is scheduled for Thursday on at Tennessee State Capitol from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and again at 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. A memorial service will take place Friday at 11 a.m. at the Downtown Presbyterian Church at 154 Fifth Avenue North.

Former Vice Mayor of Nashville John “Jay” West died on Wednesday at the age of 65. West served for 12 years on the Nashville Metro Council and was a prominent lobbyist on the Hill. He received his law degree from Nashville School of Law and for a time served as a legislative assistant in the U.S. House of Representatives. Visitation with the family will be Saturday (March 4) from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Spring Hill Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be on Sunday (March 5) at 2 p.m. with visitation prior to the service from noon to 2 p.m. Memorial donations can be made to Faith Methodist Church.
