Services will be held Saturday for Milton Paul Rice of Nashville, who died Jan. 1 at the age of 97. The Vanderbilt Law School graduate was a World War 2 veteran, who later worked for the State of Tennessee in various legal roles including Sales Tax Director, Commissioner of Insurance and Banking, State Attorney General and Secretary of State. After retiring from the State, Milton served as Special Counsel for NLT. The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, with visitation two hours prior to the service at Calvary United Methodist Church, 3701 Hillsboro Pike. Memorials may be made to Calvary Memorial Fund.

Nashville lawyer Joseph O. Martin Jr. died on Jan. 2. He was 89. A native of Davidson County, he graduated from Vanderbilt Law, where he was inducted into the Order of the Coif. He joined the Tennessee Air National Guard in 1948. After law school, he joined the firm of Martin & Cochran, which later became Gullett, Sanford, Robinson & Martin. He taught for 27 years at the Nashville School of Law and for over 40 years he operated the scoreboard for Vanderbilt football games.

John Payson Matthews III of Somerville died on Jan. 2. He was 85. Matthews was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea along the 38th Parallel as a first lieutenant in the signal corps. After his service, he graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law, and shortly after opened his firm on the Somerville court square. He practiced law there until December 2017. He served multiple terms on the University of Tennessee College of Law Alumni Advisory Council, as well as multiple terms as a member of the Fayette County Court. Gifts in memory of Matthews may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Somerville.

Thompson’s Station attorney Jack Edward Seaman died Dec. 31. He was 71. Seaman graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1971, after which he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served as an appellate defense attorney. He later served as Assistant Attorney General for the state and Assistant District Attorney General in Nashville. A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. on Monday, with visitation from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Brentwood United Methodist Church. James Adams Bean of Crossville died Dec. 26. He was 86. Bean lived much of his life in Cumberland County, with the exception of his legal studies and his time in the U.S. Air Force. After four years in the military, including one in Korea, he pursued his education, and graduated from the YMCA Night Law School. He was licensed in 1962, and opened Bean and Bean Attorneys with his brother in Crossville. He was appointed City Judge in 1978 and was elected to the post of General Sessions, Family and Probate Judge in 1982. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, The Muscular Dystrophy Association, or charity of choice.

Lewis Donelson III, senior counsel and co-founder of Baker Donelson, died today. He had recently celebrated his 100th birthday. A native of Memphis, Donelson graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 1941, and founded his firm Donelson & Adams in 1954. He formed the first professional limited liability company in Tennessee and established some of the earliest private pension and profit-sharing plans. He was involved in numerous philanthropic efforts and was politically active as well, including service as one of Memphis’s first councilmen, starting in 1967, and Commissioner of Finance and Administration under Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander. In 1994, Sen. Howard Baker’s firm, Baker Worthington, merged with Donelson’s firm to form Baker Donelson. The TBA will post updates when details of services are available.

Nathaniel Wade Parham of Knoxville and formerly of Memphis died on Nov. 29. He was 89. Parham focused his 61-year legal career on his real estate practice. Prior to becoming an attorney, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy. He earned the rank of Chief Warrant Officer during active duty and served in the U.S. Naval Reserves until he was 65.

Rutherford County attorney and businessman Robert Alden Brown died on Dec. 12. He was 89. A Sewanee native, Brown graduated from Vanderbilt Law and served in the U.S. Navy as a communications officer. He practiced law for many years and had a long business career. He served as CEO at Allvan Corporation, a truck body and Curtainsider manufacturing business in Lavergne. A celebration of his life will be held at Brentwood United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 5 p.m. The family will receive friends an hour and half prior to service at church. Murfreesboro Funeral Home will host a visitation Wednesday at 1 p.m. with interment afterwards in the Washington-Smith Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his name to Alive Hospice and to the Recovery Aide Fund of Brentwood United Methodist Church.

Jere Robert Lee of Nashville died on Dec. 14. He was 63. Lee, a 1979 graduate of Vanderbilt Law, practice in Tennessee for his entire career, until his battle with ALS forced his retirement in 2015. Visitation will take place Tuesday  from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m., with services to follow at 3 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Association, Appalachian Trail Conservancy or Alive Hospice.

Nashville lawyer Jack Akin Butler died on Dec. 7. He was 80. A native to the city, Butler earned his law degree from the Nashville School of Law while finishing his senior year of undergraduate studies at Vanderbilt University. He spent 20 years in the Tennessee Air National Guard and rose to the rank of Major. In 1958, he was the youngest lawyer to be asked to teach at NSL, where he taught 4th year Moot Court for 42 years. Visitation will be at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 2101 Old Hickory Blvd. in Nashville, tomorrow at 11 a.m. with services following immediately after at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nashville School of Law or Forest Hills Baptist Church.
