J. Thomas Caldwell of Ripley died on Feb. 5. He was 86. Caldwell was an attorney in Ripley for 53 years, and served as Lauderdale County Attorney for over 40 years. He graduated law school in 1962 at the University of Mississippi, where he also played football. In 1986 he was inducted as a fellow in the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a member of the Ripley Masonic Lodge and a United States Air Force veteran. Serves were held on Feb. 7.

Nashville lawyer H. Naill Falls Jr. died on Friday. He was 64. A native of Memphis raised in Arkansas, Falls graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Law in 1979, where he was the managing editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review. Falls clerked for Judge Harry Wellford of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee, and then moved on to practice commercial and securities litigation in Nashville. Visitation will be held at Montgomery Bell Academy on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., and a Rite of Farewell will take place at Christ the King Catholic Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the Tennessee Justice Center or Alive Hospice.

Nashville lawyer Richard Ray Hedgepath Sr., 81, died Jan. 25. A veteran, Hedgepath was a graduate the YMCA Night Law School, practicing law in Nashville for 40 years with the law firm Collins Hedgepath Lee & Young. He is survived by two sons, including Richard Hedgepath Jr., who is a lawyer in Nashville. Visitation is today at West Harpeth Funeral Home, 5 to 8 p.m., and Wednesday noon to 2 p.m., followed by a service at 2 p.m.

Services for Knox County Judge Richard Baumgartner have been set for Feb. 1 at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church in Knoxville at 6 p.m. A visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Joy of Music School, Second Harvest Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, the American Red Cross or a local charity of your choice. Baumgartner, who served for 18 years on the bench in Knox County Criminal Court, died on Tuesday at the age of 70.

Former Democratic state Sen. Joe Haynes died today, The Tennessean reports. He was 81. Haynes, an attorney, served nearly three decades in the Tennessee legislature before his retirement in 2012. He then returned to private practice as an attorney with Haynes, Freeman and Bracey. Last year, Haynes was indicted on one charge of sexual battery. He pleaded not guilty and was awaiting the start of the trial this year.

Nashville lawyer Catherine Dale Burrus Castleman died on Jan. 20. She was 84. A Nashville native, she began her career in education, teaching and coaching at Dupont High School, before she headed to law school. She graduated from Nashville School of Law in 1983 and later took a position as counsel for the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development, where she worked for more than 20 years. She served in leadership roles in many community organizations, including the Nashville Barristers Auxiliary and the Lawyers Association for Women.

Richard Baumgartner, who served for 19 years as Knox County Criminal Court judge before resigning amidst a drug scandal, died yesterday, Knoxnews reports. He was 70. A New York native, he graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Law and started his practice in Knoxville as a defense attorney. He was appointed to the Criminal Court bench in 1992, a position he held until 2011, when he resigned and pleaded guilty to misconduct for buying pain pills from a felon on probation in his court. He served a six-month sentence for lying to investigators. He had presided over numerous high-profile cases, including that of “black widow” Raynella Dossett Leath and one of the trials of the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.

Murfreesboro lawyer Guy Roosevelt Dotson died on Jan. 16, at the age of 76. A native of Elora, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. and was a 1967 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law. He was appointed District Attorney General for the 16th Judicial District in 1969 and served in that position until his retirement in 1995. Funeral services will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, 1488 Lascassas Pike. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, 519 Greenland Drive. Visitation with the family will also be at Woodfin Chapel, from 3 to 7 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Charity Circle of Murfreesboro or the Child Advocacy Center of Rutherford County.

Nashville lawyer Marshall L. Hix died on Jan. 14, at the age of 64. Hix, a graduate of Nashville School of Law, practiced for many years with Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs. He was a former Associate General Counsel with First American Corporation in Nashville, and a fellow of the Nashville Bar Foundation. A memorial service will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday at West End United Methodist Church in Nashville, 2200 West End Ave. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Doak-Howell Funeral Home, with funeral services to follow. Maryville lawyer Jama Lynn McMurray died on Jan. 5. She was 49. McMurray, first licensed in 2000, served Blount and Sevier counties for many years. Services were held on Jan. 9.
