Columbia lawyer Jerry Carothers Colley died Nov. 23. He was 91. Colley obtained his law degree from Vanderbilt in 1951. He practiced law for 65 years, serving on the Tennessee Supreme Court Board of Professional Board of Responsibility, and was a member of his local bar associations, as well as the American College of Trial Lawyers. A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church, 222 West Seventh Street, Columbia, Tennessee, 38401.

Chattanooga lawyer Charles Edward “Ed” Lane died Nov. 4 at 76. A U.S. Army veteran, he was commissioned a second lieutenant following his graduation from college and was stationed in Germany from 1964 to 1965. After returning to Chattanooga and working at an insurance company for several years, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1969. Upon graduation he joined Dan Massey in the practice of law. They practiced together until Massey's death, after which Lane continued a solo practice until retiring in 2005.

Former state Sen. Ben Atchley, who served as Senate Minority Leader during his time in the legislature, died yesterday Knoxnews reports. He was 88. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and a former Southern Bell lineman, Atchley was first elected to the Tennessee House in 1972 and to the Tennessee Senate shortly after in 1976. Nicknamed "Gentle Ben," he retired in 2004 after serving 32 years with a reputation of resolving differences between lawmakers. A graveside service will be held at New Prospect Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 4920 Prospect Rd. in Knoxville on Sunday at 1 p.m. Following a graveside service, the family will receive friends at Graystone Presbyterian Church, 139 S. Woodlawn Pike, from 2:30 p.m., with a Celebration of Life service to follow at 4 p.m. Memorials may be made to Graystone Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.

After facing a battle with cancer, Franklin Rep. Charles Sargent died on Tuesday, The Tennessean reports. He was 73. The Franklin Republican was one of the senior members of the Tennessee General Assembly, where he headed up the House Finance, Ways and Means Committee to create the state's budgets for the last eight years. He's served in the legislature since 1996. Last October, Sargent announced he would retire from the legislature after 2018 to deal with his mounting health issues. Visitation will be at Williamson Memorial on Nov. 17 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. His funeral will take place on Nov. 18 at First Presbyterian Church on Franklin Road in Franklin. Services will start at 2 p.m.

Kingsport attorney John D. Parker, Jr. died Nov. 7 following a brief illness. He was 67. John graduated from East Tennessee State University with a psychology degree and later received his law degree from Nashville School of Law. He was a member of the Tennessee and Kingsport Bar Associations and served as a Magistrate in Sullivan County. John practiced law in Kingsport for 34 years. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. on tonight (Nov. 12) at First Broad Street United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. The graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at East Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 871 N. Weisgarber Rd., Knoxville, TN 37909, or to First Broad Street United Methodist Church, 100 E. Church Circle, Kingsport, TN 37660.

A celebration of life for Columbia attorney Claudia Jack has been set for Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Columbia. The family will have a private service and burial later in the week. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church in Columbia, 311 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 38401 or St John’s Churchyard in Ashwood, 1116 West Seventh Street, PMB75, Columbia, TN 38401. The longtime public defender for Tennessee’s 22nd Judicial District died Friday morning in Nashville. Prior to her election to the public defender post in 1998, Jack clerked for Tennessee Supreme Court Justice William J. Harbison and served as an assistant district attorney. Claudia Jack, the longtime Public Defender for Tennessee’s 22nd Judicial District, died this morning in Nashville. A Vanderbilt Law School graduate, Jack was a past member of the Tennessee Bar Association’s Board of Governors and was currently representing the 22nd Judicial District in the TBA House of Delegates. Nashville lawyer James Alan Flexer died Oct. 29 at the age of 61. A 1981 graduate of Tulane Law School, he founded and operated the Law Offices of James Flexer in downtown Nashville. He was a member of the TBA Bankruptcy Law Section as well as the TBA Senior Counselors Up to Something (TBASCUS) group. He practiced in the areas of bankruptcy, insolvency and reorganization, general civil litigation, family law and juvenile law. Memphis attorney Marvin Ballin, founder of criminal defense law firm Ballin, Ballin & Fishman, died today, News Channel 3 reports. He was 87. Ballin was a former South Memphis shopkeeper who switched to practicing law in the 1960s. His son, Leslie Ballin, joined him in the practice after graduating from Memphis State in 1977. Services are set for 2 p.m. tomorrow at Baron Hirsch Synagogue, 400 South Yates.

Knoxville lawyer Kenneth “Kenny” Christiansen died on Oct. 26. He was 59. Christiansen was a 1991 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, and was licensed the next year. He was an attorney with Finkelstein, Kern, Steinberg, and Cunningham for over 20 years. A memorial service followed by a receiving of friends will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 620 State Street in Knoxville. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Arthritis Foundation, the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxville or other appropriate charities.
