Sevier County lawyer Herbert Dennis Jarvis Jr. died on Feb. 6 at the age of 79. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1963 and served in the 134th Air Refueling Group of the Air National Guard, attaining rank of Major, serving as JAG officer. He represented State Farm and Tennessee Farmers Insurance companies for over 40 years, and the City of Sevierville and Sevier County School Board for more than 30 years. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 14 in the West Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

George Arthur Williams, an attorney who worked for decades in the Memphis area, died on Feb. 2. He was 95. Williams was born in Memphis and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II before enrolling at the Memphis State University-Southern Law University. He passed the bar in 1949 and became licensed in 1950. With partner Jack Gillespie, they developed a successful insurance agency, Executive Underwriters, operating for several decades in Memphis and Denver. Visitation will be at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave. in Memphis, from 5 to 8 p.m. with the rosary at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church, 203 S. White Station Rd., on Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. Donations may be made in his honor to the Alzheimer’s Association-TN Mid-South Chapter, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

Knoxville attorney Steven Owens died Saturday after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 37. Owens received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2008 and was admitted to practice in Texas and Tennessee. He practiced law in Knoxville with Merchant & Gould. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Rest Haven Funeral Home in Rockwall, Texas. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. at the First Rockwall United Methodist Church with a graveside service to follow.

Robert L. “Bob” Walters of Rockwood and Chattanooga died on Jan. 28. He was 92. Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Walters was a U.S. Army veteran who served in occupied Japan and and later during the Korean War before attending the Drake University School of Law. He worked as an attorney in the civic affairs department of the New York Stock Exchange for several years before returning to Iowa in 1968 and later to Chattanooga, where he worked at Provident Life Insurance Company until his retirement in 1990. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Rockwood at 328 W. Rockwood St, Rockwood, TN 37854.

Harry Curtis Williams of Johnson City died on Dec. 19 at the age of 80. He was a Bristol native and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1973. After he graduated high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served for six years. He later graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law, after which he moved to Johnson City and began practicing both corporate and private law. Chattanooga lawyer Michael Alan Anderson died on Jan. 22 at the age of 58. He received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 1985. He began his legal career in Birmingham, Alabama, before returning to Chattanooga, becoming a partner with Gearhiser, Peters & Horton from 1987 to 1995. He then became a founding partner of Horton, Maddox & Anderson through 2010. Prominent Chattanooga attorney Bill Ortwein died Jan. 26 at the age of 78. A native of Chattanooga, Ortwein joined the Marine Corps as a PFCI and later served in the Marine Corp Reserves as a lance captain. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law and was employed by Noone, Moseley and Bell before joining the District Attorney’s office in 1966. In 1976, he was elected to the Tennessee State Senate for the 10th District, where he served as chairman of the Judicial Committee. He served two terms in the Senate. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Lane Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Chattanooga or St. Jude’s Hospital.

Knoxville attorney Gary W. Wright died on Jan. 21 at the age of 66, the Knoxville Bar Association reports. Wright joined Wimberly Lawson Wright Daves & Jones PLLC in 1983 and started in its Morristown office before joining the Knoxville office in 1988. He practiced labor and employment law for the firm's clients for decades. Prior to entering private practice, Wright was a federal prosecutor for the National Labor Relations Board, working in its Peoria and Atlanta regions. Services for Wright will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Taos. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church, according to The Taos News.

Knoxville attorney Roy Patrick Neuenschwander died on Jan. 13 at the age of of 70. A native of St. Paul, Minnesota, Neuenschwander grew up in Knoxville and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1973. Neuenschwander practiced law for four decades and retired just a few years ago. A memorial service will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 711 S Northshore Drive in Knoxville, on Saturday, Jan. 26, time to be determined later.

Nashville attorney Sam Bartholomew Jr. died Friday at the age of 74. Bartholomew grew up in Kingsport and enrolled at the U.S. Military Academy, where he was commissioned as an armored cavalry officer and served in Europe, Panama and Vietnam. He arrived in Nashville in the early 1970s to attend Vanderbilt Law School, where he later taught from 1974 to 1984. In 1977, he helped launch Stokes Bartholomew and handled a wide range of work, including corporate, health care, government relations and economic development items. The firm grew to include Memphis-based Evans & Petree and local tax law specialists Holton Goodman & Blackstone. Four years later, he led talks to have his firm join forces with New Orleans-based firm Adams and Reese. Visitation with the Bartholomew family will take place at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 4715 Harding Pike, on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon. A memorial service will follow at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that gifts be made to Abe’s Garden, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes or the Sam Bartholomew Vanderbilt Law Scholarship for Veterans.
