Hendersonville attorney Tom E. Gray died on May 26 at the age of 77. A native of Shelbyville, Gray earned his law degree from the Nashville YMCA Law School. Prior to practicing, he began his career as a teacher and eventually served as dean at Martin Methodist College and Volunteer State Community College. In 1980, he began practicing law until 1982 when he became judge for the Family Court for Sumner County. In 1986, he became Chancellor for the 18th Judicial District and served until his retirement in 2014. Visitation with the family will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hendersonville and again on Friday at 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations to be made to the Volunteer State Community College Foundation in Gallatin, or the Gallatin Noon Rotary Foundation Christmas for Kids in Gallatin.

James O. Bass Sr., a fixture for generations in the Nashville legal community and an influential business and political leader in the state, died yesterday at the age of 108, the Tennessean reports. Bass, a native of Nashville and the son of Bass, Berry & Sims founding member F.M. Bass, attended Harvard Law School before joining the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He served terms in the Tennessee State Senate and House, where he introduced legislation to introduce General Sessions Courts in Nashville. In later years, Bass continued to stay active at Bass, Berry & Sims well after his retirement, mentoring young attorneys and supporting his colleagues. Retired judge James B. “Buddy” Scott Jr. of Oak Ridge died on May 9. He was 83. A 1965 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Scott became the Anderson County Circuit and Criminal Court Judge in 1978 and was reelected every election thereafter until retirement in 2005. Prior to becoming a judge, he served as the Assistant District Attorney General for Roane, Loudon, Blount, Meigs and Morgan counties. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge. The funeral will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the American Heart Association or 10 Glenlake Parkway, NE South Tower, Suite 400, Atlanta, GA, 30328.

Memphis attorney and former TBA President James Fraser Humphreys Jr. died on May 6. He was 93. Humphreys, a Memphis native, graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1950. A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, he practiced law for over 50 years in Memphis and was senior partner of Humphreys Dunlap, Wellford, Acuff and Stanton. Humphreys served as TBA president in 1993-94 and was also a former president of the Memphis Bar Association and the Memphis Bar Foundation. He served many years on the boards and as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and Tennessee Bar Foundation. His family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday and at Idlewild Presbyterian Church on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. before the 1:30 p.m. service celebrating his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Idlewild Presbyterian Church, LeBonheur Children's Hospital, Church Health or the University of Tennessee College of Law.

Pleasant View lawyer James Wallace “Wally” Kirby died on April 22 at the age of 72. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, and raised in Macon County, he received his law degree from Nashville School of Law. Upon graduation he went to work for W. B. Lockert Jr., as an assistant district attorney for the 23rd Judicial District, covering Cheatham, Dickson, Humphreys, Stewart and Houston counties. While working for the 23rd Judicial District he served under three District Attorneys, Lockert, Kenneth Atkins, and Dan Alsobrooks. He became the Senior District Attorney in 1990, Deputy District Attorney in 1997 and remained until he was appointed as the Executive Director of the Tennessee District Attorneys General Conference in July 1999.

Memphis lawyer Bobby Leatherman has died at the age of 59. A Memphis native, he attended law school at the University of Mississippi. Upon completion, he came back to Memphis to work at the law firm Armstrong Allen, until he left to practice law on his own, with the help from his protégé, Parke Morris. He loved the Memphis community and served as president of Cotton Carnival in 2002. A visitation will be held Saturday at St. Peter's Catholic Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a funeral mass. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Franklin lawyer Doug Fisher died Sunday. He was 91. A 1952 graduate of Vanderbilt Law School, Fisher co-founded the Nashville law firm of Howell & Fisher PLLC in 1964 after serving as an aide to governors Frank G. Clement Sr. and Buford Ellington. He was an inaugural member of the Board of Trust of the Nashville School of Law, serving from 1993 to 2015. He taught civil procedure at NSL for seven years, and was honored in 1997 with the Distinguished Faculty Award. Judge Frank G. Clement Jr. described Fisher as a “statesman of the bar.” Learn more from NSL. The Celebration of Life for Fisher will be held on April 16 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in downtown Franklin at 3 p.m. Visitation will begin at noon at the church's Otey Hall.

Knoxville lawyer John Alfred McReynolds Jr. died at his home on Monday. He was 78. McReynolds graduated from Notre Dame University and received his law degree from the University of Tennessee. After three years in the Air Force’s Judge Advocate Corps, he returned to Knoxville where he practiced law for 45 years. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service. Robert "Bob" Milton Stivers Jr. of Knoxville died on March 31 at the age of 73. A native of Oak Ridge, he spent his childhood in Memphis before returning to East Tennessee in 1963 to attended college. Stivers went on to graduate from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1969. During his 50-year legal career he served as the president of Oak Ridge Bar Association, was a member of The Hamilton Burnett American Inn of Court and the State Bar Archives Committee. A celebration of life will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Central United Methodist Church, 201 3rd Ave. In lieu of flowers, take a kid fishing, make contributions to Central United Methodist Church or donate to a favorite charity.

Knoxville lawyer Pamela Gail Steele died yesterday at the age of 74. Born in Florida, she was raised in Knoxville and attended the University of Louisville School of Law and the Georgetwon University Law Center. She worked in Washington, D.C., for a time at the offices of the U.S. Small Business Administration and Economic Development Administration before returning to Knoxville in the 1980s. She joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and she eventually became civil chief in that office until her retirement in 2006. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on March 26 at the First Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Planned Parenthood.
