Knoxville lawyer Claude Leon Franks died Monday at 71. A 1984 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Franks spent two years in private practice and then joined the Knox County District Attorney’s Office. He served there until retiring in 2015. Franks also had 30 years of military service, including  during Vietnam and Desert Storm. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. EDT Monday at the East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 2200 John Sevier Highway, Knoxville 37920. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or Heifer International.

Nashville lawyer Lewis Berkeley Hollabaugh died Aug. 13 at the age of 85. A 1956 graduate of Vanderbilt University and a 1961 graduate of the university’s law school, Hollabaugh started his career as an associate attorney at Manier, Crouch, White & Herod (now Manier & Herod). He remained with the firm during his entire 36 years of practice. He served as managing partner and on the executive committee of the firm over the years. Hollabaugh spent most of his career as a trial lawyer with an emphasis on professional liability. He also handled construction surety law. He is survived by his daughter Lela Hollabaugh, an attorney at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, among others. The family will have a private service. Memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Community House, 5601 New York Ave., Nashville, TN 37209, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lawrenceburg native and attorney Daniel Freemon died on Aug. 7 at the age of 69. Freemon earned his law degree from the University of Memphis in 1977 before starting the Freemon Law Firm in Lawrenceburg where he practiced law for more than 40 years. Freemon’s family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday at Neal Funeral Home, 231 N. Military Ave., Lawrenceburg, with funeral services at 3 p.m. Interment will follow at Freemon Cemetery in Leoma.

Collierville Lawyer Calvin Joseph McCullough died on Aug. 4. He was 90. After earning his undergraduate degree from Mississippi State University, McCullough served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge, McCullough went on to enroll in night classes at Southern University Law Center, earning his law degree in 1962. He later joined the law firm of Wilkes, Neely and Evans in Memphis. McCullough spent more than 55 years practicing law and was the grandfather of Circuit Court Judge Mary Wagner. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private memorial service was held with immediate family only. Memorials may be sent to Collierville First Baptist Church Senior MinistrySt. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or Memphis Union Mission.

Memphis lawyer Lloyd C. Kirkland Jr. died Aug. 4 at 92. A Memphis native, Kirkland received his undergraduate and law degrees from Yale University before returning to Memphis where he practiced law for 67 years. After becoming licensed in 1953, he began his legal career at Taylor and Taylor until he started his own practice in 1963. Kirkland remained a solo practitioner for the rest of his career, specializing in wills and estates. Shortly before his death, when he was still regularly going to court, he was the oldest practicing lawyer in Memphis. Throughout his career, Kirkland was an active supporter of Memphis Area Legal Services, where there is a conference room named in his honor, and he served many times as a special judge in Probate Court. Because of COVID-19, a small graveside ceremony will be held Monday for family only, with a memorial service to be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to Memphis Area Legal Services Inc., Suite 1100, Falls Building, 22 North Front Street, Memphis, TN 38103 or online at malsi.org.

Knoxville lawyer Darryl G. Lowe died Aug. 1 at the age of 75. Lowe attended the University of Tennessee on a baseball scholarship, graduated and enlisted in the Air Force. Following discharge, Lowe entered the University of Tennessee College of Law. First licensed in 1974, he initially worked for Kennerly, Montgomery & Finley. He later started his own firm with Cliff Shirley and later Steve Yeager. A memorial service will be held Saturday for family only, but also will be livestreamed on the Facebook page of Berry Highland Memorial beginning at 11 a.m. EDT. A public reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to The Mission of Hope, P.O. Box 51824, Knoxville, TN 37950.

Nashville lawyer William Wayne LeRoy died July 25 after a struggle with cancer. Raised in Jasper, LeRoy studied journalism at the University of Tennessee and first explored careers in sports reporting, patent medicine sales and insurance before deciding to pursue law. He earned his law degree in 1966 from the YMCA Law School (now the Nashville School of Law) and joined McCarley, Hollins & Pride. He later was named senior partner at Schulman, LeRoy and Bennett. LeRoy was local counsel for Allstate Insurance Company and general counsel for Exchange Insurance Company. He was a lobbyist for Insuror's of Tennessee and was actively involved in legislative issues and governmental relations for 30 years. He also handled surety bond work and represented a number of general contractors. His three daughters all followed in his professional footsteps, with two becoming attorneys and one a lobbyist. A service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Endowment Fund in Memory of Wayne LeRoy, 85 Fairway Drive, Nashville, TN 37214 or the charity of the donor’s choice.

James Hiram Street of Grundy, Virginia, died July 9 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 62. Street earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee in 1984, and a law degree from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis) in 1987. He began practicing law in 1988 with the Street Law Firm LLP. Street spent many years volunteering with the Boy Scouts, served on the Sequoyah Council Board and established two foundations: the Breaks Scout Transportation Foundation and Breaks Scout Foundation. He was an avid outdoorsman, nature photographer and pilot. Memorial donations may be made to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, P.O. Attorney Matthew B. Long died July 19 at the age of 37. Long was a 2013 graduate of the Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law where he served as Moot Court president and as an intern law clerk for Chief Justice Gary Wade of the Tennessee Supreme Court. He began his legal career at Gilreath & Associates and later moved to Nashville to open the Tennessee division of the Atlanta-based Roth Firm. Long returned to Knoxville last August where he opened the Law Office of Matt Long. Matt was active in the Tennessee Trial Lawyers Association and served for many years in the Knoxville Barristers and on the Functions Committee of the Knoxville Bar Association. A Celebration of Life will be held at Calhoun’s on the River from 4- 8 p.m. EDT on July 30. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there is a limit of 50 people allowed in the banquet room at one time. Attendees are asked to  stagger their arrival times to avoid overcrowding and to wear a mask.

Robert William “Bob” Ratton Jr. of Memphis died unexpectedly on June 11. Ratton received his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law and an LL.M. in taxation from New York University School of Law. He was an accomplished tax and commercial attorney, practicing at several firms in Memphis and Washington, D.C., before becoming general counsel at Armstrong Relocation & Companies where he worked for two decades. A memorial for Ratton was held on June 16.
