Memphis lawyer Edward “Eddie” R. Young died at his home Monday after a long illness. He was 81 years old. A 1966 graduate of the Vanderbilt University Law School, he began his career with Newell Fowler, who was known as one of the first labor relations attorneys in the nation. Over a more than 50 year legal career, Young built a nationwide practice devoted to the representation of management in all aspects of labor relations and employment law. He co-founded the firm of Young & Perl PLC and served as a shareholder in the Memphis office of Baker Donelson. He also served both the Memphis mayor and Shelby County mayor as a special attorney dealing with fire department, police and sheriff’s department, and hospital authority issues. He also taught labor legislation at the University of Memphis. Funeral services were today in Memphis. Memorial donations may be given to the Memphis Jewish Federation, Anshei Sphard Beth El Emeth Synagogue, or Temple Israel.

Belmont University College of Law first-year student Laurel Anne Flaherty died Oct. 12 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. She was 22. Flaherty moved to Nashville from Pembroke, Massachusetts, to attend Belmont. She earned a BSW from the university earlier this year before enrolling in the law school. According to her obituary, Flaherty was passionate about improving the lives of others and gave tirelessly to many organizations, as well as being an avid equestrian and animal lover. A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. EDT at Saint Thecla's Church, 145 Washington Street, Route 53, Pembroke. Burial will follow at Pembroke Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to; International Justice Mission, P.O. Box 96961, Washington, DC 20090-6961 or to Saddle Up Nashville, 1549 Old Hillsboro Road, Franklin, TN 37069-9136.

A Belmont University College of Law student died yesterday evening after a line of severe storms swept through Middle Tennessee, Nashville’s WSMV reports. Laurel Flaherty, a first-year law student, was in Williamson County’s Old Natchez Trace area when a tree fell on her Nissan Rogue. She was 22. Flaherty was a native of Pembrooke, Massachusetts, and remained in Nashville for law school after graduating from Belmont University in May. Her family describes her as the “sweetest kid ever” who just “wanted to make the world a better place.” Parts of Williamson County experienced significant damage from the storms on Wednesday, with reports of trees falling on homes and across roadways.

Retired Wilson County Criminal Court Judge David Earl Durham died on Oct. 8. He was 66. A graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Durham began his legal career in 1981 as a private practice attorney. He later joined the office of District Attorney General Tom Price as an assistant district attorney from 1986 to 2009. Durham served on the bench as 15th Judicial District Criminal Court judge from 2009-2014. The family has scheduled a celebration of life for Durham on April 20, 2023, at an undetermined location. Knoxville lawyer Charles Michael Conroy died on Oct. 2. He was 76. Conroy was born in Clarksville and graduated from Vanderbilt University before going on to earn his law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. He practiced law in both Tennessee and Georgia. Conroy was a lifelong shell collector and had an extensive collection and knowledge of shells from around the world and especially Sanibel Island, Florida. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Clarksville. The day and time of the services and burial will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to the local chapter of the Parkinson’s Association.

Ted M. Winestone, born Moshe Tuvia Wajnsztejn in Baranowicze, Poland, in 1929 passed away on Sept. 17, one week short of his 93rd birthday. Winestone lost his parents, his younger brother and many extended family members during the Holocaust. Winestone survived the Holocaust after living in the woods with his father's brother and two cousins amongst the Partisans. When World War II ended, Winestone was 15 years old. He had survived typhus, bone-chilling winters, starvation and the ever-present threat of German bullets. In 1947, Winestone emigrated to America, learned English, and graduated from high school and college while working full time. He served in the U. S. Marine Corps (attaining the rank of staff sergeant) during the Korean War and subsequently became a certified public accountant, homebuilder and attorney, attending Southern Law University. He was a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, and his legal and accounting practice served the Mid-South community for more than 50 years. Funeral services were held Sept. 19 at the Sam Abraham Chapel in Baron Hirsch Cemetery.

Lloyd Senter Adams Jr. died on Sept. 10 at 96. A 1946 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, he served in the U.S. Army (Infantry) until 1950, mostly with the occupation forces in Austria. Following his Army service, he attended Vanderbilt University School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of the Vanderbilt Law Review. Adams practiced law in Humboldt until 1982 when he left his firm of Adams, Ryal & McLeary to join the Thomason Hendrix law firm in Memphis. He served as president of the Young Lawyers Conference of the Tennessee Bar Association in 1960-61 and was a member of the Tennessee Law Revision Commission from 1963-1967. At various times he served as a member of the Tennessee Appellate Court Nominating Commission and the Tennessee Supreme Court Advisory Commission on Rules of Civil Procedure. He became a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the American Bar Foundation and the Tennessee Bar Foundation, and was a member of the American and Tennessee Bar Associations. A memorial service will be held Sept. 24 at 3 p.m. in the chapel at The Lodge At Shannondale. Chattanooga lawyer Randy Nelson died Sept. 13 at the age of 81. An Army veteran and 1968 graduate of the University Tennessee College of Law, Nelson joined the law office of Eugene Collins and Associates in Chattanooga. When Collins retired in 1990, Nelson succeeded him as the third city attorney of Chattanooga. Nelson served in that role until 2009. The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. EDT on Sunday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson 37343. A celebration of life will be held Monday at 2 p.m. EDT at Hixson Presbyterian Church, 1450 Jackson Mill Dr., Chattanooga 37343. Former federal judge and U.S. Solicitor General Ken Starr died today at 76, The Hill reports. Starr was nominated by former President Ronald Reagan to the federal appellate court for the D.C. Circuit in 1983, where he served until becoming solicitor general during the first Bush administration. Starr headed up the Whitewater investigation into former President Bill Clinton, which ultimately led to his impeachment. In 2019, Starr headlined the Bench/Bar program during the TBA’s annual Convention in Nashville, where he shared his experience as independent special counsel. According to this family, Starr passed away in a Houston hospital following complications from surgery.
