Services for former Tennessee Gov. Don Sundquist will begin tomorrow in Memphis with visitation at 10 a.m. and a "Celebration of Life" service at 11 a.m. CDT at Christ Church Memphis, 4488 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38117. Overflow parking for the service will be available at Oak Court Mall and Memphis police will be on hand to assist with traffic, the Commercial Appeal reports. Next week on Sept. 5, Sundquist will lie in state at the Tennessee State Capitol from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT. His funeral will be held the same day at First Lutheran Evangelical Church, 113 Eighth Ave. S., Nashville 37203. He will be buried in the East Tennessee town of Townsend.

Don Sundquist, a former congressman and two-term Republican governor died Sunday. He was 87. The Tennessean reports that he died at a Memphis hospital following surgery and a short illness. Sundquist moved to Memphis in 1972, and became active in Republican Party politics. He led the National Young Republicans for three years, was an organizer for Sen. Barry Goldwater's presidential campaign, served as a delegate to the 1976 and 1980 Republican National Conventions, and managed the presidential campaign of Sen. Howard Baker. He was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1982 from the Seventh District and served in that role for 12 years. Sundquist was elected as the state’s 47th governor and served from 1995 to 2003. During his tenure, Tennessee saw significant economic development and the arrival of two professional sports franchises. Sundquist focused his efforts on welfare reform, crime reduction and a failed effort to enact a state income tax. After leaving office, he moved to East Tennessee where he founded a lobbying firm and co-founded a barbeque restaurant. Funeral arrangements are pending though Sundquist will lie in state at the Tennessee Capitol before he is laid to rest in Townsend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Foundation to Eradicate Duchenne.

Retired Memphis lawyer Carroll Cullen Johnson Jr. died in Virginia last week. He was 97. Born in Memphis, Johnson earned his law degree in 1952 from the University of Virginia School of Law. He began his law practice in Memphis and continued to practice there for 58 years. Johnson was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and Memphis Lawyers Journal Club. Johnson moved to Green Level Farm in Orange County, Virginia, after retiring. A memorial service was held in Orange last week.

Longtime Metro official Raymond Lester "Ray" Barrett died Tuesday at the age of 88. Barrett worked 52 years for the Nashville government, including as clerk and master of the Davidson County Chancery Court and administrator of elections. He was president of the Tennessee County Officials Association and later worked for the Williamson County Circuit Court. Barrett earned his law degree in 1962 from the Nashville School of Law. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. CDT Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, 101 Legends Club Ln., Franklin 37069. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to service on Saturday at the church. Interment will be at Williamson Memorial Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Salvation Army.

Saul Belz, a lawyer in Memphis for more than 40 years, died Wednesday. He was 81. Belz graduated from the University of Texas in 1964 and earned his law degree in 1967 from Vanderbilt University. Since 2000, he had practiced business litigation at Glankler Brown. Burial will be at 10 a.m. CDT on Monday at Temple Israel Cemetery, 1708 Hernando Rd., Memphis 38106. The Daily Memphian has this remembrance.

The American Bar Association (ABA) reports that former ABA President Philip S. Anderson Jr. of Little Rock, Arkansas, died Tuesday at age 88 of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Arkansas in 1959. Anderson was active in the ABA throughout his career, serving in the House of Delegates for 30 years, as chair of the House of Delegates from 1992-1994 and as president from 1998-1999.

Longtime Monroe County Clerk & Master Judith “Judy” Ann Burris Lee of Madisonville died Aug. 6. Lee, mother of Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Sharon Lee, served in the role for 38 years from 1963 to 2001. When she retired in 2001, she was one of the longest serving clerk and masters in the state. She then went on to serve eight years on the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners. Lee was active in the state clerk’s association and her community, serving on the Hiwassee College Board of Trustees and the American Legion Auxiliary Tennessee Chapter, American Ex-Prisoners of War Smokey Mountain Chapter, Madisonville Kiwanis Club and Sequoyah Trail Garden Club. She also was active in politics, serving as chair of the Monroe County Democratic Party and Monroe County Democratic Women. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Edgar "Buddy" R. Bowers of Harriman died March 17 at the age of 85. Bowers graduated from Emory University School of Law in 1966. While in law school, he served in the U.S. Army and the Georgia National Guard. After several years of private practice in Roane County, Bowers joined Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation as vice president and general counsel. He served in that role until he retired in 1999. Bowers was active in his community, serving on the Tennessee Historical Commission, Harriman Board of Education and Tennessee Board of Regents. He was chair of the Roane County Republican Party and served on the Tennessee State Republican Executive Committee. David L. Flitcroft, a lawyer based in Oak Ridge, died on July 25 at age 74. Flitcroft attended Southern Oregon College and the University of Oregon and earned his law degree from the Tennessee College of Law in 1978. David was a longtime member of both the Anderson County Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association. A memorial service will be held in the student building of Fellowship Church, 8000 Middlebrook Pike, Knoxville on Aug. 28. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon EDT prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Cheryl Rumage Estes, a shareholder in the Memphis office of Lewis Thomason, died July 15 after a brief illness. She was 65. Estes, a 1982 graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law, began her legal career with the firm as a runner and went on to become one of its first female shareholders. For a decade, she led the Labor and Employment Group. Estes also was a member of the Shelby County Bar Association and a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation. Memorial donations may be made to the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law.
