Fayetteville attorney Hubert Donald "Don" Holman died Friday at age 87. Holman graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1957 and received his law degree from Vanderbilt Law School in 1960. Holman then served in the U.S. Army as a military attorney through the U.S. Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG). At the end of his military service, Holman joined his father’s law practice, Holman & Holman. He was appointed general sessions judge in 1977, which was later expanded to include serving as juvenile court judge. Holman served as general sessions judge until he retired 1998. Visitation with the family will be held Nov. 4 at First Presbyterian Church, 101 Mulberry Ave., Fayetteville 37334 from 9:45-10:45 a.m. CDT, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or a local nonprofit.

Funeral services have now been scheduled for Memphis attorney and civic leader Ricky Wilkins, who died last week. Visitation will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. CDT at First Baptist Broad, 2835 Broad in Memphis. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m., also at First Baptist Broad. A memorial reception will be held on Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Serenity Columbarium and Memorial Garden, 1638 Sycamore View Rd. in Memphis.

Ricky Wilkins, Memphis attorney and longtime member of the Memphis Housing Authority, died Oct. 19 at age 58 of brain cancer. A Memphis native, Wilkins attended Howard University and Vanderbilt University Law School. He was a leader in the Memphis Bar Association and the Ben F. Jones Chapter of the National Bar Association, and president of the TBA Young Lawyers Division from 1999-2000. He was later named a TBA YLD Fellow. The Commercial Appeal has this remembrance. Funeral arrangements are pending.

A celebration of life for former U.S. District Court Judge Thomas A. Wiseman Jr. will be held Oct. 26 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 3900 West End Ave, Nashville 37205. Wiseman served on the federal court for the Middle Tennessee District from 1978-2013 on the recommendation of Sen. Jim Sasser. He was nominated by then-President Jimmy Carter. Wiseman also was chief judge of the district from 1984 to 1991. Wiseman died in March 2020 at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Visitation with family will take place at 10 a.m. CDT, followed by a celebratory service for Wiseman and his wife, who also recently died, at 11 a.m.

Headshot of Chattanooga lawyer Max Bahner who died Oct. 13, 2023Longtime Chattanooga lawyer and former TBA President Thomas Maxfield "Max" Bahner died this past Friday at the age of 89, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports. Bahner earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1960 and practiced for decades at Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel. Bahner focused his practice primarily in the area of complex litigation. He also was an American Arbitration Association (AAA) arbitrator and a Rule 31 certified mediator. He was serving as an emeritus member of the firm at the time of his death. Bahner served as TBA president from 1980-1981. He also served as president of the Chattanooga Bar Association, and for nearly 17 years as a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) House of Delegates, leading the Tennessee delegation for nine years. Service to the Tennessee judiciary included chairing the Tennessee Supreme Court's Advisory Commission on the Rules of Civil Procedure for seven years, during which time the commission wrote the Tennessee Rules of Evidence, and chairing the task force that reviewed and recommended changes to the Tennessee Rules of Judicial Conduct. Funeral services are pending. Elizabethton lawyer William J. “Bill” Byrd died unexpectedly Oct. 8. He was 65 years old. Byrd practiced law with Norris, Bush and Byrd and was a member of the Carter County Bar Association and Tennessee Bar Association. Byrd practiced law in Elizabethton for over 35 years. He graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1981 and received his law degree in 1984 from the University of Tennessee College of Law. A service to remember Byrd's life was held yesterday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church, Building Fund, 1502 Riverview Dr., Elizabethton, TN 37643.

Portrait of former Tennessee Judge Richard DinkinsRetired Court of Appeals Judge Richard H. Dinkins died yesterday at the age of 71, the Administrative Office of the Courts reports. A native of Nashville, Dinkins earned his undergraduate degree from Denison University in Ohio and then returned to Nashville for law school, graduating from Vanderbilt University in 1977. Dinkins joined state Sen. Avon N. Williams Jr. in practice and they worked together for more than 20 years. During his time in private practice, Dinkins was the lead attorney for Nashville's school desegregation cases as well as other high-profile civil rights and discrimination cases. From 2003-2008, he served as a Davidson County chancellor. He joined the Court of Appeals in 2008 and served until his retirement in 2022. Dinkins held leadership positions with a number of legal organizations, including president of the Napier-Looby Bar Association and board member for the Nashville Bar Association. Among his many honors, Dinkins was awarded the William M. Leech Jr. Public Service Award from the TBA Young Lawyers Division Fellows in 2004. Funeral services will be held on Oct. 21 at First Baptist Church Capitol Hill, 625 Rosa L Parks Blvd., Nashville 37203. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the service following at 11 a.m. CDT. Franklin Orrin Craft died on Sept. 15 at age 88. A graduate of Memphis State University and Southern Law University, he passed the Tennessee bar in 1961. In 1968, he started Dennies Contracting Co. Inc., sold the company and retired in 1986. He and his wife moved to Siesta Key, Florida, in 1992. A memorial service will be held Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. EDT at Robert Toale & Sons Funeral Home, 170 Honore Ave., Sarasota, Florida 34232. A Memphis remembering will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
