Former Sullivan County Circuit Court Clerk Raymond Winters died Sunday, April 8. He was 72. Mr. Winters served as clerk for 31 years. Visitation is today from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. at Blountville United Methodist Church, followed by funeral services. Graveside services will be held at Gunnings Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Just a week after prosecutors dismissed the criminal case against him, former First Judicial District Attorney General Joe Crumley has died. Crumley's declining health led prosecutors to dismiss charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving, failure to yield to blue lights and sirens, and evading arrest. Funeral services for Paul E. Meyers, 33, of Jackson will be held tomorrow (April 5) at 11 a.m. at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala., with a graveside service following on Friday at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis. Visitation with the family will take place tonight (April 4) from 5 to 8 p.m. at Ridout's Funeral Home in Homewood, Ala. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to the Jimmie Hale Mission, 3420 2nd Avenue North, Birmingham, Ala. 35222. Laird Foster, 89, has died in Concord, Mass. Graduating from the Nashville YMCA Night Law School at age 58, Foster practiced law for 15 years with her colleague Maryda Colowick -- primarily helping Nashville's poor access social security benefits. In the early 1960s, Foster participated in the sit-ins at the segregated lunch counters in downtown Nashville. Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, John Edgar (Ed) Schmutzer, died on Saturday, March 31. He was 64. Mr. Schumtzer, of Sevierville, obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia. He was a combat veteran having served as a captain with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. After a brief stint in private practice in Nashville, he became assistant U.S. attorney in Knoxville, where he served for more than 30 years. He was the brother of retired longtime state prosecutor Al Schmutzer Jr. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at 2 p.m., with a funeral service at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Sevierville (214 Cedar Street). Interment will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Diabetes Association, Paws for Patriots or the Wounded Warriors Project. Coburn Dewees Berry III died yesterday (April 1) in Franklin, after a brief illness. He was 89. Berry graduated in 1948 from Vanderbilt University Law School, where he was a staff member of the Law Review and member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He practiced law for more than 60 years in Nashville and Franklin and was known for his expertise in real property, trust, probate and municipal law. A memorial service will be held at Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church on Thursday at 11 a.m. Visitation with the family will be at the church on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., and one hour before the service on Thursday. Jackson lawyer Paul Meyers died on Saturday (March 31) while running the Andrew Jackson Half-Marathon. He was 33. The assistant public defender collapsed on the course and was transported to Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Jackson Sun has more. Long-time Oak Ridge attorney, alternate city judge and former county attorney Harry Lillard died Thursday, March 29. He was 81. He received his law degree from the University of Tennessee in 1955. Mr. Lillard volunteered for the U.S. Navy after passing the Tennessee bar exam and served two years in charge of the legal office for Submarine Squadron 6. He then began practicing law in Oak Ridge. He was elected president of the Anderson County Bar Association in 1979. The family will receive friends on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m., with burial at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with military honors led by the Tennessee National Guard Honor Guard. Edwin Arnold, who served in the Tennessee House of Representatives and was also an assistant prosecutor, has died after being struck by a car on Saturday, March 24. He was 77. A graduate of Cumberland University School of Law, he was in the Tennessee General Assembly from 1963-67. Arnold also served Blount, Loudon and Roane counties as an assistant district attorney. His funeral was Monday at First Baptist Church in Loudon. The News Sentinel has his obituary.

Funeral services were held today for Cleveland attorney James G. "Jim" or "Gentleman Jim" Cate Jr. He died Wednesday (March 21) at the age of 89. A graduate of the University of the South and Duke University’s law school, Mr. Cate had been a long-time member of Miller & Martin PLLC. Before joining the firm, he was vice president, general counsel and secretary of Bowaters United States Coporation, Bowaters Southern Paper Corporation and Bowater Carolina Corporation. Mr. Cate also wasactive in his community and profession, serving as campaign chairman and president of the United Way of Bradley County, president of the Bradley County Bar Association and director of Junior Achievement of Bradley and McMinn Counties. He also hadbeen a trustee and a member of the Board of Regents of the University of the South, and had served as president of its alumni association. Memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 320 Broad St. NW, Cleveland 37311 or University of the South, 735 University Avenue, Sewanee 37383.
