Nashville lawyer Alfred T. Adams Jr. died May 21 at the age of 85. A 1952 graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School, Adams practiced law in Nashville and was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly in 1953. He retired in 2002 and moved to Beersheba Springs where he took up residential construction, surveying, farming and beekeeping. Adams was a charter member of the Nashville City Club, director and general council of the Nashville Union Rescue Mission, and deacon and elder of the Downtown Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. A memorial service honoring his life will be held June 20 at 11 a.m. at the Downtown Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., The Tennessean reports.

Columbia lawyer Glenn Lee Cox died Thursday (May 23) after a long battle with cancer. He was 65. Cox earned his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 1978 and established his own law firm with a focus on creditors' rights. He faced cancer four times – in 1991, 2008, 2012 and 2013 – and was said to have battled the disease with the same strength and passion that he applied to representing his clients. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Macular Degeneration Foundation. The Columbia Daily Herald has more on his life.

Attorney William Logan “Dick” Barry died Wednesday in a Lexington nursing home at the age of 89. Barry, who once served as publisher of the Lexington Progress newspaper, was elected to the state House in 1954 and became floor leader in 1958. In 1963, with the support of Gov. Frank Clement, he was elected speaker. He served in that position until 1967, when he joined the Ellington administration and served until  Ellington left office in January 1971, with the inauguration of Republican Gov. Winfield Dunn. In accordance with Barry’s wishes, no formal funeral service is planned and at this point no memorial service has been scheduled.

Elizabeth Collins, a partner with Thomason Hendrix in Memphis, died this morning (May 23) after a long battle with cancer. She was 50. Collins was a member of the Tennessee Judicial Selection Commission and a Master in the Leo Bearman Sr. American Inn of Court. In 2011, she became the youngest person ever to receive the Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Memphis Bar Association. In 2012, the Commercial Appeal wrote an inspiring piece chronicling her journey. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Idlewild Presbyterian Church with a reception to follow at the church.

Memphis attorney Bill Clifton died last Wednesday (May 15) at his home of heart failure. He was 79. A graduate of Memphis State University and Southern Law School, Clifton became a partner in the law firm of Burch, Porter and Johnson. The celebrated lawyer Lucius Burch took a special interest in Clifton and was his valued mentor. Clifton opened his own law firm and maintained it until his retirement in the late 90’s. During his career, Clifton specialized in complicated criminal tax defense and had many celebrated cases, including the defense of the entertainer Jerry Lee Lewis. The family will hold a private memorial service by the ocean.

Sonja White, managing attorney of Memphis Area Legal Services’ (MALS) Family Law/Domestic Violence Unit, died this past Saturday (May 4). She was 49. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday. Both will be held at the East Side Baptist Church, 3232 Covington Pk., Memphis 38128 according to the Memphis Bar Association. White graduated from Hofstra University School of Law and was president of the Memphis Area Women’s Council and a member of the Memphis Bar Association. She previously chaired the Memphis & Shelby County Domestic Violence Council, and served on Shelby County Unified Family Court Task Force in 2007. She joined MALS in 2001. Last year, White sat down with the Memphis Commercial Appeal and talked about her work.

Former Memphis lawyer Frank Tamble Stegbauer died April 30 in Naples, Fla. He was 88. Stegbauer graduated from the University of Memphis School of Law. After serving in World War II, he returned to Memphis to begin a career in the maritime industry. He served as chair and board member of the Memphis Port Commission, chairman of the board of the American Waterways Operators and first chairman of the Coast Guard Towing Safety Advisory Committee. He worked at Warner and Tamble, a family maritime business, and then became co-owner of Southern Towing Company. In 1986, he became the majority owner of the company. He retired in 2008 and relocated to Florida. Funeral services were held this past weekend in Memphis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Avow Hospice, Office of Development, 1095 Whippoorwill Ln., Naples, FL 34105 or the charity of one’s choice. The Commercial Appeal has more on his life.

Brentwood lawyer Jerald Christian Bangerter Jr., 47, died May 3 after a long battle with cancer. A 1995 graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School and Army veteran (with service in Desert Storm), Bangerter worked at Wagner, Watson & Pettit in Hawaii; and Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, HCA and Vanderbilt University in Nashville. For the last nine years, he has worked as chief compliance officer at LifePoint Hospitals in Brentwood. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1100 Gray Fox Ln., Franklin. The funeral will take place Thursday at 10 a.m. at Harpeth Hills Memory Gardens, 9090 Hwy. 100, Nashville. A graveside service will immediately follow the funeral and a celebration of Bangerter’s life will follow the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Cancer Association, Wounded Warrior Project, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Missionary Fund or charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral services have been set for attorney Susan McEwen Clark who died April 30 in Memphis. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the memorial service following at 3:30 p.m., both at St. John's United Methodist Church, on the corner of Peabody and Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. John's United Methodist Church.
