Memphis lawyer Charles Jeffrey “C.J.” Barnett died Nov. 21. He was 62. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Evangel Church, 262 N. Perkins Rd., Memphis 38117. Barnett earned his law degree from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1975. He operated a general civil practice focusing on insurance, tort and personal injury law, and provided alternative dispute resolution services to clients. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to New Hope Christian Academy, 3000 University St., Memphis, TN 38127. The Commercial Appeal reported the news.

Floyd Wallace Lewis Sr., 88, died Monday (Nov. 25) in Maryville. Originally from Mississippi, Lewis served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then earned his law degree from Tulane University Law School. Lewis worked for Middle South Utilities (now Entergy) in various capacities -- from corporate lawyer to CEO -- for more than 36 years. Though he lived in New Orleans for most of his life, Lewis moved to Tennessee after Hurricane Katrina. A memorial service will be held tomorrow (Nov. 27) at 2:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Maryville. The family will receive friends prior to the service. Funeral services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Kentwood, La. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Read more about his life in Knoxnews.

Friends of Donald F. Paine will be received at Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville 37919, on Sunday (Nov. 24), from 2 to 4 p.m. Burial will be at a private service at Old Gray Cemetery. Paine died early Monday morning (Nov. 18) at the age of 74. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Legal Aid of East Tennessee, 502 S. Gay St., Suite 404, Knoxville 37902. Memorial services will be held Saturday for Chattanooga attorney and Miller & Martin partner James Guy Beatty Jr., who died Nov. 12 after a long illness. He was 82. A graduate of the University of Florida and the Emory University School of Law, Beatty served as corporate secretary of the Navarre Corp., Chattanooga Times Printing Company, Olan Mills Inc. and Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. He also served as director of the Krystal Company, Brock Candy Company, Volunteer State Life Insurance Company, Chubb Life Insurance Company, Chattanooga ChooChoo Company and numerous other corporations. He was a member of the Tennessee Board of Law Examiners and chair of the board of directors for the National Conference of Bar Examiners. The Chattanoogan.com reports that services will be at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Members of the family will receive friends at the church’s Talbird Hall prior to the service at 10 a.m.

Former Jasper city attorney Paul DeWitt Kelly Jr. died Saturday (Nov. 16). He was 86. A graduate of Vanderbilt University and its law school, Kelly was a descendant of Alexander Kelly, one of the founders of the state of Tennessee. He practiced law in Jasper as both a solo practitioner and a partner in Kelly and Kelly Attorneys, where he remained of counsel after his retirement. Kelly was active in the profession, serving as a member of the Tennessee Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Foundation and Marion County Bar Association, which he also led as president. A private burial was to be held at Forest Hills Cemetery today. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Good Shepherd. A reception will follow, the Chattanoogan reports.

Knoxville lawyer John Madison Smartt, 94, died on Wednesday (Nov. 13) at Shannondale Healthcare Center in Knoxville. A memorial service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 2829 Kingston Pike in Knoxville at 1 p.m. on Nov. 30, with receiving of friends to follow in the church Fellowship Hall. During World War II he served as an Army officer before returning to the University of Tennessee and receiving his law degree in 1948. He was the UT Director of Alumni Affairs from 1948 to 1969 before joining the law firm of Fowler Rowntree & Robinson, and later was with Ambrose Wilson Grimm & Durand. He co-coordinated the Tennessee Law Institute from 1972-1988. He was chair of the Knoxville Bar Association's Memorials Committee for many years and was one of the founding members of the KBA's Senior Section. Read his obituary in Knoxnews.

Thomas Everett Crawford Sr., who served in the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office as a prosecutor for 25 years, died Oct. 29. He was 88. A veteran of World War II, he was an Army paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne and parachuted into LeHavre, France. Crawford was one of the original parishioners of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and an active supporter of numerous charities, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He earned his law degree from Southern Law University and was licensed to practice law in Tennessee in 1952. Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice. Former Memphis attorney Richard Scott Wade died Oct. 18. He was 46. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held at 3 p.m. at Cafy é Keough in Memphis. Wade, originally from Columbia, Tenn., graduated from University of Memphis School of Law and obtained an advanced law degree from Temple University. He practiced law in Memphis for four years before moving to Missouri, Pennsylvania and, most recently, Vero Beach, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
