Nashville area lawyer John Hopkins Dillon died Aug. 12 at 76. A native of Woodbury, Dillon earned his law degree from the then-Nashville YMCA Night Law School in 1967. He spent his entire career at Commerce Union Bank, which had become NationsBank by the time he retired in 1998. Funeral services were held last Friday at Harpeth Hills Memorial Gardens. Knoxville lawyer and TBA senior counselor Cecil L. Forinash died July 25 after a brief illness. He was 96. A 1949 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Forinash spent his entire career in the Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps, serving across the United States, Korea and Europe. He retired in November 1969. Funeral services were held last Friday at the Church Street United Methodist Church. Forinash will be laid to rest with his wife at Arlington National Cemetery. Chattanooga attorney James Anthony "Jamey" Hewitt died from injuries received in a single-vehicle accident early Sunday morning (Aug. 3). He was 44. A longtime resident of Chattanooga, Hewitt was a graduate of McCallie School and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received his law degree from the University of Memphis School of Law. The family will receive friends on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, 7454 E. Brainerd Rd. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Dr. Thomas Quisenberry officiating. Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. The Chattanoogan has more.

Knoxville lawyer Robert Scoggin “Bob” Stone Jr. died July 30 at the age of 62. A 1977 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Stone’s career spanned 36 years in Knoxville. He most recently was serving as a partner with Elmore, Stone & Caffey PLLC. In addition to a passion for law, Stone enjoyed entertaining, music, UT sports, boating and golf. A Celebration of Life will be held Aug. 16 at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 9908 Kingston Pike, Knoxville 37922. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Nashville lawyer Peter Halverstadt will be held Aug. 9 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, 3511 Belmont Blvd., Nashville 37215. A wake will follow from noon to 2 p.m. at Maggiano's, 3106 West End Ave., Nashville, 37203. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Guardianship and Trust Corp., a non-profit organization that provides financial management services for those unable to make informed decisions on their own behalf. Janet Graf Tate, the wife of former TBA President S. Shepherd "Shep" Tate, died Sunday (July 27) at 90. A native of Cincinnati, Janet met and married Tate while he was clerking for Judge John D. Martin in Cincinnati. The couple later moved to Memphis, where she was involved in a number of civic organizations and founded the Mental Health Society of Memphis and Shelby County. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the parish hall at Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1720 Peabody Ave., Memphis 38104. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Grace-St. Luke’s. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Church Health Center, to Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Retired Memphis lawyer and TBA senior counselor Walter Bernard Hill died July 21. He was 85. A graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law, Hill was an avid supporter of Memphis football, basketball and baseball, was a member of the Highland Hundred and served on the athletic department’s Scholarship Endowment Board. In addition, through his charitable giving, the Thompson-Hill Chair of Accounting was endowed at the business school. Hill was a certified public accountant and chief financial officer at the investment firm UMIC. For more than 20 years following his retirement, he and his wife served each year at the Jordanian Bedouin Medical Hospital. Services were held last week. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bernard Hill Missions Fund, First Evangelical Church, 735 Ridge Lake Blvd., Memphis, TN 38120. Nashville lawyer Peter Halverstadt, a member of the TBA’s Government Affairs Committee, has died. A graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, Halverstadt worked for both the Davidson County district attorney and public defender while in school. Following graduation, he opened a solo civil and criminal defense practice, which he maintained from 1994 to 1998. He later joined the Workers’ Compensation Division of the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and most recently was serving as assistant administrator of the division and legislative representative for the office. Halverstadt is a past president of the Guardianship and Trusts Corporation, a non-profit organization that provides financial management services for those unable to make informed decisions on their own behalf. Funeral information is not yet available.

Lawrence Russell “Rusty” White died July 12. White, 55, was a criminal defense attorney with the Public Defender's office in Shelby County.
