Ernest A. Petroff died Monday (April 6) after a battle with lung cancer. He was 69. Petroff was a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law and practiced in Huntsville, Tenn., and surrounding federal and state courts. He was a fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and was a frequent book review contributor to the Tennessee Bar Journal. The family will receive friends at the Huntsville Presbyterian Church Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a funeral service following at 4 p.m. Interment of ashes will follow at Mossop Memorial Cemetery, adjacent to the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Huntsville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 39 in Huntsville, TN.

Former Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) President Johanna J. McGlothlin died this morning in Easley, South Carolina. A 1984 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Law, McGlothlin worked at Legal Aid of East Tennessee before her retirement. She served as KBA president in 1996. The family will receive friends on Saturday in Easley, according to the KBA. More details to follow.

Shelby County Chancellor Oscar “Bo” Carr was found dead of a gunshot wound Monday night (April 6) in his car in the parking lot of the Memphis Country Club. Police believe he took his own life, the Memphis Daily News reports. Carr was appointed to the 30th Judicial District post this past October by Gov. Bill Haslam. Before the appointment, he handled civil litigation and mediation at the Memphis law firm of Glankler-Brown for nearly 40 years. In a statement released today, Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Sharon Lee remembers Carr as a highly respected member of the legal community, others in the Memphis legal community offered their reflections in a Commercial Appeal article.

Attorney and history activist Clarence Edward Elkins Jr. died Tuesday (March 31). He was 76. A 1966 graduate of Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, Elkins served the state of Tennessee for 30 years before retiring and embarking on a new career as a part-time tour guide at the Sam Davis Home in Smyrna. In 2010, then Governor Phil Bredesen recognized Clarence’s work and commitment to preserving the history of Tennessee by appointing him to the Tennessee Historical Commission. Visitation will be held at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro tomorrow from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 1 p.m., with a funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in the Simpson Cemetery in the Rover community of Bedford County. Memorial contributions may be made to Enon Primitive Baptist Church, 1401 Cherry Street in Shelbyville.

John Lee Alley died today (April 1) at 79. A graduate of the University of Tennessee Law School, Alley practiced in Chattanooga for more than 40 years. Ret. Col. David F. Bautista died Saturday (March 21). He was 75. Bautista earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee after serving 30 years in the U.S. Army. He had a private practice in Elizabethton and was later appointed by then Gov. Ned McWherter to be Public Defender for the First Judicial District. Services will be Sunday at 4 p.m. in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremations Services. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Graveside service and inurnment will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

Funeral services will be Friday for John W. “Bill” Dietzen of Chattanooga, who died Tuesday (March 17) at 83. A Vanderbilt University Law School grad, Dietzen was admitted to the bar in 1955 and has been in practice since then. Dietzen was active in the local legal community, serving on the board of the Chattanooga Bar Association, as a founding member of the Chattanooga Legal Aid Society, as president of Chattanooga Christian Legal Society and as founding member of the Ray L. Brock Jr. and Robert E. Cooper Inn of Court. Dietzen also was active in the TBA, serving as president of the Young Lawyers Conference (now the Young Lawyers Division) and as chair of the TBA’s General Practice Section.

Attorney and former judge Byron Douglas Bryant died March 8 at the age of 66. He attended the University of Tennessee College of Law and was with a private law practice in Halls Crossroads for 33 years. Bryant also served as Plainview City Judge for many years. The family will receive friends from tomorrow 5:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. follow by funeral services at 7 p.m. at Washington Presbyterian Church, 7405 Washington Pike in Corryton. Interment will be at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on Gov. John Sevier Highway Friday at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Civil War Trust.

Floyd Ernest Hutcherson died Wednesday (March 4) at the age of 88. Hutcherson served in the U.S. Army in World War II before attending law school at the University of Tennessee. He practiced law in Rockwood for 60 years. The family will receive friends tomorrow from 4-5:30 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in downtown Rockwood. The funeral will follow at 5:30 p.m. Concluding services and interment will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery with full military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church, 328 W. Rockwood St., Rockwood, TN 37854.

Jackson attorney Tom Murray died yesterday (March 5). Visitation will be this Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church, 365 Wallace Rd., Jackson 38305. The funeral will take place Monday at 1 p.m. at the church. Murray was a 1979 graduate of the University of Memphis School of Law and worked for years for the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
