TBA member Jonathon Med Yarger of Cardon, Ohio, died Aug. 15. He was 58 years old. Funeral services are being held today at Monreal Funeral Home in Eastlake, Ohio. The viewing continues through 8 p.m. Yarger was a founding partner of his law firm Yarger, Radel and Pentz, LLC. He earned his law degree from The University of Arizona School of Law. Nashville business leader and civil rights champion Francis Guess died at his home Thursday night, the Tennessean reports. He was 69. Guess worked for decades for the betterment of civil rights and equality, which included a 30-year run on the Tennessee Commission on Human Rights. President Ronald Reagan appointed him on the U.S Commission on Civil Rights, where he served six for years. Guess also served on the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and was a member of the Board of Professional Responsibility. Services are pending.

James Caldwell Lee died Sunday (July 19) at the age of 90. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater and was among the first troops to occupy Japan. Post service, Lee completed his undergraduate education at Rhode Island State University and obtained a law degree from Washington and Lee University. Lee practice law for 50 years in Chattanooga, serving as president of the Chattanooga Bar Association and as a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Rule 42 Committee. A family ceremony will be held with the Rev. Ann Weeks officiating. A gathering of friends will be held at the Mountain City Club, Friday from 5-7 p.m.

David “Duck” Duckworth of Whitwell died July 10 at the age of 68. He was a retired public defender and previously worked for the district attorney’s office in Hamilton County. Funeral services were held this past Sunday and Monday in Chattanooga. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or a favorite charity. Judge D’Army Bailey died yesterday (July 12) at the age of 73, less than a year after being re-elected to the Shelby County Circuit Court. A native of Memphis, Bailey earned his law degree from Yale Law School in 1974 and practiced civil rights law in New York before moving to California. He later returned to Memphis, where he practiced law until being elected to the bench in 1990. He stepped down from the court in 2009 to return to private practice, but ran for and was re-elected to the court last year. Bailey was a civil rights activist, author and film actor. Perhaps most notably, he was among those responsible for saving the Lorraine Motel from destruction and creating the National Civil Rights Museum on that site in Memphis.

Services will be held this weekend, WREG reports. Visitation will take place Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the National Civil Rights Museum. On Saturday, funeral services will be held at noon at the Mississippi Boulevard Church, 70 North Bellevue Blvd., Memphis 38104. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial service for longtime Legal Aid attorney Jean Crowe will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in West End United Methodist Church, 2200 West End Ave. Considered by many to be the Mother of the Domestic Violence Movement in Nashville, Crowe died Monday (June 22) from a brain tumor. In lieu of flowers, make donations to Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee, 300 Deaderick St., Nashville.

Jean Crowe died today (June 22). Considered by many to be the Mother of the Domestic Violence Movement in Nashville, Crowe founded the Nashville Coalition Against Domestic Violence while an employee of Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands. The Jean Crowe Advocacy Center was named in her honor. In 2013, she was named the TBA Public Service Attorney of the Year. Information on funeral services is pending.

TBA senior counselor Edwin Gaines “Ed” Lansford Sr. of Crossville died June 11. He was 90 years old. Funeral services were held today at the First United Methodist Church of Crossville. Lansford worked as an attorney and CPA with the offices of Lansford & Associates. He earned his law degree in 1958 from McKenzie College of Law. Read more about his life in the Crossville Chronicle.

Flavis J. Lee Casson Jr. died last week (June 9) at the age of 75. He attended the University of Tennessee Law School, never intending to practice law, but feeling that the knowledge would help him in his other endeavors. A memorial service was held Broad Street United Methodist Church in Cleveland on June 12. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Holston United Methodist Home for Children Cleveland.
