News Type: Correction

Friday's issue of TBA Today incorrectly stated Joanne Sowell's law school. She attended Tulane University School of Law. According to the Nashville Post, Sowell is preparing to launch her campaign to challenge current U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn.

News Type: Correction

A news item in Friday’s TBA Today said that a temporary restraining order had been issued to halt the state's new law banning minors’ access to gender-affirming care. No such order has been issued, though the American Civil Liberties Union in April sued on behalf of several Tennessee families and a Memphis doctor, and the Department of Justice later joined the lawsuit asking the court to do so. The Tennessean has since updated its story that was the source for the TBA Today item.

An article in Tuesday's TBA Today indicated that Gov. Bill Lee had called on lawmakers to consider legislation allowing law enforcement to remove weapons from those deemed to be a risk to themselves or others. The article incorrectly stated that Lee supported a bill introduced by Sen. Heidi Campbell, D-Nashville. Instead, he urged introduction of a “new, strong order of protection law.” The Tennessean reports on his comments about the proposal.

News Type: Correction

A story in yesterday's TBA Today contained incorrect information about the death of Lisa Edwards of Knoxville. According to the Knoxville News Sentinel, Edwards became unresponsive in the back of a police cruiser and was taken back to Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, where she died of a stroke the next day.

News Type: Correction

A story in the Jan. 25 issue of TBA Today contained incorrect information about the death of Memphis motorist Tyre Nichols. According to noted civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing Nichols' family, the 29-year old died as a result of “multiple uses of force.” The Daily Memphian has more of his comments.

An order issued yesterday by the Tennessee Supreme Court altered the requirements for meetings of the Tennessee Lawyers Fund for Client Protection. The amendment to Rule 25, Section 5.01 states there will “be no personal appearances except upon request of the Board” or “written authorization of the Board Chair, pursuant to a written request” that is submitted 14 days prior to the meeting.

The list of candidates who successfully passed the July Tennessee Bar Exam that appeared in Monday's TBA Today contained errors. The Tennessee Board of Law Examiners has updated its list to correct those errors. That new list is now available.

News Type: Correction

A story in yesterday’s TBA Today mischaracterized newly installed Davidson County Chancellor I’Ashea Lynnae Myles. Chancellor Myles is the first Black female chancellor in the state, not just in Davidson County. Alert readers reminded us that Irvin H. Kilcrease Jr. was the first Black chancellor in the state. He was appointed by then Gov. Lamar Alexander in 1980 and died in 2012. See photos from Myles’s induction ceremony.

An item in Tuesday's TBA Today on the death of longtime Nashville attorney Wilson “Woody” Sims gave an incorrect age for him. Mr. Sims was 97 when he died on June 26.

News Type: Correction

A story in yesterday’s issue of TBA Today, which summarized the provisions of a petition filed by the Board of Tennessee Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection (TLFCP) with the Tennessee Supreme Court, incorrectly stated that the petition asked the court to raise the cap on each claim. In fact, the board is asking the court to amend existing limitations in Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 25 Section 13.01 to raise the attorney cap from $250,000 to $400,000 upon recommendation of the board and with approval of the court.
