The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold a virtual phone clinic and in-person legal advice clinic next week for those with questions about housing and renters’ rights, bankruptcy, medical bills, debt collection, domestic violence, SNAP benefits and unemployment benefits. The phone clinic will take place Monday from 4:30 to 6 p.m. CDT. The in-person clinic will take place Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down Nashville, 1125 12th Ave. S. The Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission and its partners are continuing the Tennessee A2J Summer Fellows Program, which connects law students with pro bono opportunities across the state. Legal and law-related organizations are invited to submit pro bono opportunities using this online survey through June 24. The program runs through July 30 and is not intended to replace any existing internships or law student projects but as a supplement to existing volunteer opportunities. Please contact Anne-Louise Wirthlin for more information.

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville (ABC) will host two legal clinics this month. The Black-Owned Small Business and Nonprofit Legal Clinic occurs every third Thursday of the month and is a joint effort from ABC and the Bradley Law Firm to provide free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits. It is held virtually and the next clinic will be held on June 17. Ask the Experts: Pro Bono Business & Legal Clinic will be held on June 30 and offers 30-minutes of one-on-one time with an industry expert on topics including legal issues, marketing and accounting. The Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) Barristers recently received a grant from the ABA Young Lawyers Division to refurbish tablets to use at legal advice clinics, the KBA reports. The clinics, which provide legal advice on a wide variety of issues, are offered in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee. The KBA will serve as a collection center for those who wish to donate. The devices then will sanitized and reconditioned. Tablets may be dropped off at the KBA Office, 505 Main St., Ste 50, Knoxville, TN 37902 until June 16.

Legal groups in East Tennessee will hold a virtual pro bono debt relief clinic on June 12. The clinic is available to qualified individuals who live in counties served by Legal Aid of East Tennessee. Volunteer attorneys will conduct initial meetings with clients to discuss their situations and options. Sponsors of the event include Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne Bauknight, the federal bar associations in the Eastern District of Tennessee, Knoxville Bar Association, TBA Young Lawyers Division, Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services.
