The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold two clinics this week. On Wednesday, a clinic for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT in Nashville at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., 37203. Then on Saturday, the Belmont Clinic will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 2005 12th Ave. South, Nashville 37204. All times are central. Those attending must wear a mask. The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic this Thursday. Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of assistance but must register today. Clients may sign up online. To volunteer, email vlpa@abcnashville.org.

Tennessee legal groups will offer a virtual debt relief clinic for Tennesseans in the Western District of the state on April 30 from 9 to 11 a.m. CDT. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ruthie Hagan will begin the clinic with an overview of the bankruptcy system. Clients will then be paired with volunteer attorneys in break-out Zoom rooms for confidential discussions about debt relief options. The debt relief clinic is a project of the TBA Young Lawyers Division and Bankruptcy Law Section, Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, Memphis Area Legal Services, West Tennessee Legal Services and Legal Aid of East Tennessee. West Tennessee Legal Services and the Faith and Justice Alliance are teaming up to host an expungement clinic on May 6. Attorneys are needed prior to that date to virtually meet with clients and prepare expungement documents to be filed in Madison County courts. Volunteer attorneys can assist remotely from anywhere in the state. Volunteer for the clinic here. WTLS will host a CLE on April 21 specifically focused on helping clients during the clinic. The program will run from noon until 1 p.m. CDT and will be presented by Savannah Quintero and Andy Cole. Register for the CLE here.

The Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic is a joint project of the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. This is a general advice and referral clinic which requires attorney volunteers for its continued operation. The next clinic will be held in person at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., on April 13 from noon to 2 p.m. Sign up here.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division, Belmont Law and Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands last week hosted an expungement clinic in Murfreesboro. The clinic was held in partnership with Murfreesboro Cold Patrol, a homelessness outreach organization. Nine attorneys and nine law students volunteered their time to serve individuals experiencing homelessness, facing expungement issues and needing advice on fee waivers and voting rights reinstatement. On Wednesday, a clinic for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT in Nashville at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., 37203. Then on Thursday, a clinic will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. at Greenhouse Ministries, 309 S. Academy St., Murfreesboro, 37130. All times central. Those attending must wear a mask. Knoxville Legal Ministry at Cokesbury, in partnership with Administer Justice, will hold a legal advice clinic from 9 a.m. to noon EDT on April 9. Volunteer attorneys are needed to staff the clinic. To volunteer or for more information contact Crystal Schrof. Administer Justice is a national non-profit that works with local churches to provide civil legal services for those in need. Legal issues may range from landlord-tenant to applying for disability benefits. Malpractice insurance is provided.

The American Bar Association, its Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defense and Task Force on Eviction, Housing Preservation and Equity will host a free one-hour webinar on Thursday at 1 p.m. EDT to help lawyers learn about best practices for preventing evictions. The ABA has adopted 10 guidelines for residential evictions, which focus on how to assist tenants with eviction matters, including due process protections, right to counsel, eviction diversion programs and data privacy protections. During the webinar, attendees will hear examples from around the country about how these guidelines are being put in action.
