Several Shelby County groups are hosting an event Saturday to help people with expungement of eligible criminal offenses, job opportunities, child support and drivers’ license issues. The event is free and open to the public, and will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT at Mt. Moriah-East Baptist Church at 1248 Haynes Rd. Sponsors are the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, the Shelby County General Sessions Clerk’s Office and the District 21 Prince Hall Masons.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division hosted a Debt Relief Clinic on April 30 to help low-income debtors in West Tennessee. Bankruptcy Judge Ruthie Hagan began the clinic with an overview of the bankruptcy system, and then clients met with volunteer attorneys in break-out Zoom rooms for counsel and advice about debt relief options. The award-winning clinic is supported by the TBA Bankruptcy Law Section, Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Commission, Memphis Area Legal Services, and Legal Aid of East Tennessee. The next Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic — a joint project of Knoxville area legal organizations — will take place Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. This general advice and referral clinic is supported by the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. A new program from Bass, Berry & Sims, Tennessee Justice for Our Neighbors and the Vanderbilt Immigration Practice Clinic will address how lawyers can help newly arriving refugee populations who are resettling in Nashville. “Ukraine, Afghanistan, Haiti: Refugees in Crisis & How Lawyers Can Help” will take place in-person and virtually on May 23 from noon until 1 p.m. CDT. The presentation will provide an overview of at-risk populations and the basics of immigration and asylum law needed to take on a case with no prior immigration or asylum experience required. At the end of training, options will be provided to match with a family or individual who has been screened for asylum eligibility and is waiting for representation. The Nashville Arts & Business Council is seeking lawyers to volunteer for its online legal clinic “Ask The Experts.” The pro bono clinic offers free 30-minute sessions for artists, musicians and other creatives to get their legal and business questions answered. Volunteers are asked to sign up for two-hour shifts. The next clinic will take place May 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. CDT. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold a clinic on Wednesday specifically for veterans. Legal Aid of East Tennessee, in partnership with the TBA Young Lawyers Division, Chattanooga Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and Tennessee Supreme Court Access to Justice Initiative, is hosting a family law clinic tomorrow from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center. Volunteers are needed to give advice on a variety of family law issues, as well as assist with coordination and intake. Those interested in volunteering should contact Mary Frances DeVoe at mdevoe@laet.org.

The Legal Aid Society this week announced that Nashville lawyers Frank Garrison and Leigh Walton will serve as co-chairs for its 2022 Campaign for Equal Justice. Garrison will oversee fundraising in the community, while Walton will lead efforts aimed at law firms and attorneys. Walton, a member at Bass, Berry & Sims, has more than 40 years of practice in the areas of corporate governance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions and securities offerings. Garrison has more than 40 years of management and legal experience in both private and public companies in the financial and business service sectors. He presently serves as a Director of M3-Brigade Acquisition Corp II. The goal for this year’s campaign is $1 million according to LAS Director DarKenya W. Waller.
