Knoxville Center of the Deaf (KCD) is looking for a lawyer willing to serve as the pro bono attorney on its nonprofit board. The center provides interpreting services throughout the Greater Knoxville and Knox County area, including at hospitals, doctors’ offices, dentists and meetings. The pro bono attorney would commit to (1) become familiar with the by-laws and corporate status of the center, (2) attend quarterly board meetings; and (3) advise the board as to legalities related to issues that arise. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold two clinics this week. On Wednesday, a clinic for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT in Nashville at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., 37203. Then on Saturday, the Belmont Clinic will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at 2005 12th Ave. South, Nashville 37204. All times are central. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands (LAS) will hold its free legal advice clinic at Belmont on Saturday. The Knoxville Bar Association and its Bankruptcy Section, in partnership with Legal Aid of East Tennessee and U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Suzanne H. Bauknight, will hold a Pro Bono Debt Relief Clinic on Sept. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. The event will take place at the Knox County Public Defender's Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St., Knoxville 37919. Judge Bauknight will present a short overview of the bankruptcy system and other solutions for clients before volunteer lawyers meet with them to discuss their options. Sign up to volunteer.

The next Veterans’ Legal Advice Clinic — a joint project of Knoxville area legal organizations — will take place Aug. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT at the Knoxville Community Law Office, 1101 Liberty St. This general advice and referral clinic is supported by the Knoxville Bar Association Barristers and Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of East Tennessee, Knox County Public Defender’s Community Law Office, University of Tennessee  College of Law, Lincoln Memorial University-Duncan School of Law, and the local Veterans Affairs office. Sign up here to volunteer. Masks are optional but should be worn pursuant to CDC guidelines.

West Tennessee Legal Services will host a legal clinic on Aug. 12 for clients needing simple wills and powers of attorney. Attorney participation in the clinic will be completely remote. Attorneys will be able to use WTLS software to autogenerate documents for the clients. To volunteer, email Andy Cole.

The Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) pro bono legal clinics are focused specifically on the needs of Nashville’s creative community. The next clinic for income-qualified artists, musicians and creatives will take place Aug. 10 from 6-8 p.m. CDT at McCabe Park Community Center, 101 46th Ave. N., Nashville 37209. The TBA Young Lawyers Division, Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and Legal Aid of East Tennessee will host a virtual name change clinic on Aug. 20 and are in need of volunteers. A one-hour training will be provided from 9 to 10 a.m. CDT, immediately followed by the clinic from 10 a.m. to noon CDT. Volunteers will help members of the public fill out a name change petition, give advice about representing themselves in the filing and give them information on next steps. Malpractice insurance will be provided through Legal Aid. Register online to volunteer or contact Alix Rogers with questions.

Legal Aid of East Tennessee will hold two legal clinics this month. The first, a general legal advice clinic, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon EDT on July 16 at the Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center. To volunteer, email Mary Frances DeVoe. The second, a family law and housing clinic, will be held July 23 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT in Knoxville. This clinic is being held in conjunction with the YWCA of Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley and will be held at the YWCA’s Phyllis Wheatley Center.
