The TBA Young Lawyers Division is co-sponsoring a Citizenship Clinic this Saturday with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC). The clinic will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT at 3310 Ezell Rd., Nashville 37211. The clinic will assist Legal Permanent Residents in their naturalization process. A mandatory training for volunteers will take place Thursday from 6-8 p.m. via Zoom. For more information or to volunteer contact YLD Public Service Committee Chair Alix Rogers.

The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings in providing free legal services for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits at a clinic next Thursday. Issues to be covered include questions about business formation, corporate governance, contract review and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible businesses may receive up to one hour of assistance but must register by Monday. Clients may sign up online. To volunteer, email vlpa@abcnashville.org.

Bass, Berry & Sims and Gullett Sanford Robinson & Martin PLLC (GSRM Law) have teamed up with the Nashville State Community College Foundation to hold a monthly Legal Help Clinic. The clinics will begin on Sept. 13 and will allow students to meet in-person at the NSCC White Bridge campus in Nashville and virtually across the school’s seven Tennessee campuses for guidance on a variety of civil legal matters, such as landlord-tenant issues, vehicle purchase and repair, child support, expungement and more. The initiative coincides with Bass Berry’s “100 Acts of Service” in celebration of its 100th anniversary. GSRM Law is also celebrating 80 years of business in Nashville. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold a free low-income legal help clinic on Wednesday in Gallatin. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands will hold three clinics next week. On Wednesday, a clinic will be held from 4-6 p.m. CDT at the downtown Nashville Public Library. On Thursday, the group will hold its Greenhouse Ministries clinic in Murfreesboro from 3-4:30 p.m. Then on Saturday, it will hold the McHugh Clinic at Belmont from 8:30-10:30 a.m. All times are central. The Legal Aid Society will host an in-person clinic at the Downtown Nashville Public Library on Sept. 7 from 4-6 p.m. CDT. The group is in need of attorneys who can volunteer approximately one hour to provide advice to walk-in patrons. The legal clinic will focus on civil issues such as family law, housing, employment, consumer and probate matters. Attorneys are fully covered by Legal Aid’s malpractice insurance and the organization provides handouts and various legal materials to assist attorneys during the consultations. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee is hosting a free one-hour program discussing local legal clinics and other pro bono opportunities. The virtual program will take place Sept. 9 from 3 - 4 p.m. EDT via Zoom. Invitations with the Zoom link will be sent in advance to those who register. The program will be capped at 300 attendees.

The American Bar Association is collaborating with the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED) to once again mobilize lawyers to assist as poll workers in the upcoming November election. The Poll Worker Esq. Initiative encourages lawyers, law students and other legal professionals to assist in upcoming elections. The initiative kicked off today with the release of a video that details how to sign up to be a poll worker and a landing page where lawyers can sign up to volunteer. There will also be a social media campaign, which will run through the fall.

The TBA YLD, in partnership with the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands and Legal Aid of East Tennessee, hosted a virtual name change clinic on Saturday. Fifteen attorneys and eight law students met on Zoom for a training, and then assisted clients in filling out name change petitions and giving counsel and advice on pro se representation. Thirty clients were served at the clinic and $7,500 in legal services were donated. The name change clinic is a new signature project of the TBA YLD aimed at making Tennessee a more welcoming place.
