The Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts is joining the law firm of Bradley Arant Boult Cummings to provide free legal services for nonprofits and Black-owned small businesses in Nashville on Sept. 21. Advice will cover business formation, corporate governance, contracts and navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Eligible entities may receive up to one hour of assistance. Clients should sign up online. Attorneys should email vlpa@abcnashville.org to volunteer.

A news item in yesterday's issue of TBA Today had the incorrect date for an upcoming legal clinic in Memphis. The clinic, sponsored by Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) in partnership with The Hub, will take place Sept. 27 from 1-3 p.m. CDT. The clinic, which is held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, takes place at 590 Washington Ave., Memphis 38105. A legal clinic for veterans, sponsored by Memphis Area Legal Services Inc. and the Memphis Bar Association, will be held in Memphis tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m. CDT. The clinic will be moving back to an in-person forum at a new location — the Veterans Affairs’ (VA) social work offices at 575 Phelan Ave., Memphis 38126 — but virtual/telephonic options will still be available. Volunteers do not have to be certified by the VA to help. Cases include wills and estates, family law, child support, criminal defense, expungement, housing and consumer protection. Those interested in assisting should contact Jake Dickerson.

Legal Aid of Middle Tennessee & the Cumberlands will hold three legal clinics this week. On Tuesday, a clinic will be held at the Gallatin Civic Center, 210 Albert Gallatin Ave., from 4:30-5:30 p.m. CDT. On Wednesday, a legal clinic specifically for veterans will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT at Operation Stand Down, 1125 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37203. On Thursday, a clinic will be held at Greenhouse Ministries, 309 South Academy St., Murfreesboro 37130 from 3-4:30 p.m. CDT. See all September clinics. The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and McHugh Legal Help Clinic at Belmont will host a pro bono clinic at the Belmont Ministry Center, 2005 12th Ave. S., Nashville 37204 this Saturday. The clinic will run from 9:30-11:30 a.m. CDT. Walk-ins are welcome until 30 minutes before the event ends. The free clinic will offer help with issues such as family law, consumer law, debt collections, power of attorney, employment law, health law, public benefits, housing, probate/estate, wills and bankruptcy. Memphis Area Legal Services (MALS) will hold its monthly clinic at the Benjamin Hooks Library this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon CDT. The library is located at 3030 Poplar Ave., Memphis 38111. Lawyers and non-lawyers are needed for this high-volume clinic. Questions commonly raised by clients include issues involving housing, family, consumer and employment law. The American Bar Association (ABA) is mobilizing lawyers to provide legal services to victims of the recent wildfires on Maui. A telephone hotline has been activated to connect victims in qualifying counties who cannot afford an attorney to lawyers who can respond to disaster-related legal issues. Survivors can call the hotline between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. local time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Lawyers interested in assisting can find opportunities online or donate to a special fund set up to support legal services in Maui. Read more about these efforts.

Memphis Area Legal Services will host its Attorney of the Day clinic on Sept. 7 beginning at 1 p.m. CDT. During the clinic, volunteer attorneys will meet with pro se litigants to provide help and make referrals. Clients are seen on a first come first serve basis. The clinic takes place in Room 134 of the Judge D'Army Bailey Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave., Memphis 38103. Volunteer attorneys are needed to help. Sign up here to volunteer.
