Join West Tennessee Legal Services (WTLS) for its inaugural Disaster Law Seminar on Sept. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. CDT. Attorney Jessi Pruett will discusses heirship property issues; WTLS attorneys Matthew Flood and Michael Creasy will present an overview of disaster legal work, FEMA appeals and working with the community after a disaster; and Vickie Trice and Jennifer Ramcharan from the Department of Commerce and Insurance will discuss working with insurance companies after a disaster. A legal clinic in Campbell County on Saturday helped more than 40 individuals expunge their criminal records, thanks to the efforts of local officials and legal professionals. Campbell County General Sessions Judge Bill Jones, 8th Judicial District Public Defender Leif Jeffers and District Attorney General Jared Effler, Circuit Court Clerk Bobby Vann, the Bullock Law Firm, and members of the TBA Young Lawyers Division and University of Tennessee College of Law Legal Clinic contributed their time and expertise to the event. The Campbell County Sheriff's Office provided courthouse security for the clinic. See photos from the event.

The TBA Health Law Section has partnered with organizations across the state to provide free advance health care directive clinics in each of Tennessee’s grand divisions. The section is seeking volunteer lawyers to assist with the effort. No previous experience is necessary and there will be experts on hand to answer questions. The first clinic will take place in Knoxville on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon EDT. A Nashville clinic will follow on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT. The Memphis clinic will take place Nov. 9, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT. Please contact TBA Health Law Section Chair Ian Hennessey with questions and/or volunteer interest at ian.hennessey@amrllc.com.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is planning its first expungement clinic in Campbell County on Sept. 14. The group will be partnering with the Legal Aid Society to expunge criminal records. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon EDT at the Campbell County Justice Center. Volunteer attorneys are needed and should plan to arrive by 8:30 a.m. for an orientation. Experts will be on site to help guide volunteers and answer any questions. To assist, please email Tomi Robb.

The TBA Young Lawyers Division provided essential documents to 16 Sumner County firefighters today. Seven attorneys participated and provided approximately $7,500 of legal services free of charge. With the help of two Belmont Law students, these important community members received documents pertaining to powers of attorney, advanced healthcare directives and last wills and testaments. The clinic was organized by YLD District 8 Representative Grace Benitone Burnett.

Registration is now open for the next free advice clinic for Black-owned small businesses and nonprofits, set for Sept. 19 in Nashville. The clinic, sponsored by the Arts & Business Council's Volunteer Lawyers & Professionals for the Arts and Bradley, provides assistance with business formation and corporate governance, review of contracts and guidance in navigating local ordinances and state regulations. Prospective clients should register by Sept. 16. Attorneys should email vlpa@abcnashville.org to volunteer.

Belmont Law is looking for volunteers for a Power of Attorney (POA) Clinic at Casa Azafran on Sept. 7 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. CDT. Morning and afternoon shifts are available if volunteers are not able to commit to the full day. At this clinic, attorneys, with the assistance of law students, will help clients fill out POA for Care of a Minor Child forms. Volunteers also will be paired with a translator. The Memphis Bar Association’s (MBA) Access to Justice Committee is partnering with the MBA Young Lawyers Division, Councilwoman Jana Swearengen-Washington, Shelby County Circuit Court Clerk Jamita Swearengen and the Sigma Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. to host a restoration of rights clinic on Sept. 7. The TBA Young Lawyers Division (YLD) is holding an Essential Documents for Essential Workers (EDEW) Clinic on Sept. 20 from 12-4 p.m. EDT at the Sevierville First United Methodist Church gym, 214 Cedar St. in Sevierville. Volunteers are needed for a mini-legal clinic at the 2024 CHALENG/Stand-Down Meeting, which will take place at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church Family Life Center in Memphis from 10 a.m. to noon CDT on Aug. 28. The CHALENG/Stand-Down event is an annual meeting organized by the Veterans Affairs Department Homeless Program where veterans can come in for various services and discuss their needs with department staff.
