The Tennessee Supreme Court suspended the law license of Maryville attorney Cynthia Lee Costner-Sexton on Sept. 18. Costner-Sexton failed to reasonably communicate with her client, failed to provide professional services after accepting a retainer and failed to refund unearned fees. Read the BPR release.

Memphis lawyer William Leon Hendricks was suspended Sept. 17 from the practice of law by the Tennessee Supreme Court for four years, retroactive to April 30, 2013, with two years active suspension and two years of probation. Hendricks was charged with contempt for violating an injunction after he participated in transferring some assets for companies against whom the Department of Commerce and Insurance filed suit. The Tennessee Supreme Court disbarred Fletcher Whaley Long Sept. 14 from the practice of law. The court reported Long charged unreasonable fees, provided incompetent representation, filed meritless claims and more. Read the BPR release.

Sharon Elizabeth England was disbarred on Monday by the Tennessee Supreme Court after she failed to appear at a status hearing, failed to notify her client of the dismissal in the case, abandoned her practice and more. The law license of Anna Bentley Williams was transferred to disability inactive status on Wednesday by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Williams cannot practice law while on disability inactive status and may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Read the BPR release.

A number of Tennessee-licensed lawyers have been reinstated after being administratively suspended in 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 for failure to meet CLE requirements. They are now noted as reinstated. See the updated lists at the links above.

The Tennessee Supreme Court has suspended 90 lawyers for failing to comply with mandatory continuing legal education requirements in 2014. Joseph James Doherty was disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court today following four complaints of misconduct, including failing to comply with continuing legal education requirements and failing to advise a client that the case had been dismissed. The Tennessee Supreme Court suspended Edythe Paschall Christie from the practice of law Sept. 2 until further orders. Christie was suspended based upon her criminal convition for tampering with evidence in the matter of State of Tennessee v.
