By order of the Tennessee Supreme Court entered March 5, Thomas Patrick Cooper was disbarred from the practice of law effective immediately. On July 20, 2018, the Tennessee Supreme Court ordered the immediate suspension of Cooper based upon his plea of nolo contendere to one count of grand theft and one count of defrauding a financial institution in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Florida. On Aug. 9, 2018, the Board filed a petition for final discipline. A hearing panel determined the appropriate sanction in this case is disbarment.

The law license of Davidson County lawyer Lawrence Doyle Wilson was today transferred to disability inactive status pursuant to Section 27.3 of Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 9. Wilson cannot practice law while on disability inactive status. He may return to the practice of law after reinstatement by the Tennessee Supreme Court upon showing of clear and convincing evidence that the disability has been removed and he is fit to resume the practice of law.

Aminah Maurita Collick, a Georgia attorney, was reinstated this week to the practice of law in Tennessee, after being placed on inactive status on May 15, 2013. Collick petitioned the Tennessee Supreme Court for reinstatement on Feb. 14 and was granted via an order filed on March 6.

Davidson County lawyer Joanne Fellers Sowell was reinstated to the practice of law effective Feb. 14, the date on which she filed a petition seeking reinstatement from inactive status. Sowell had been placed on inactive status on May 5, 1997. The Board of Professional Responsibility found that her petition was satisfactory and recommended that the court reinstate her. The court issued the order on Feb. 25.

The Tennessee Supreme Court today entered an order denying the request of Davidson County lawyer Brian Phillip Manookian for dissolution of his temporary suspension. Manookian was temporarily suspended from the practice of law on Sept. 21 of last year upon a finding that he poses a threat of substantial harm to the public. On Sept. 28, Manookian filed a petition to end his suspension. A hearing was held and the Board of Professional Responsibility's panel recommended his petition be denied. On Jan. 22, Manookian filed a second petition, and following a hearing, he was again denied.

Davidson County attorney Ashley Denise Preston has been reinstated to the practice of law in Tennessee after having been suspended on Oct. 20, 2017. On Feb. 6, a hearing panel reinstated Preston with the conditions that she engage with a practice monitor and a licensed counselor during her two year probation.

Williamson County lawyer Emily Pouzar Jenkins was placed on inactive status in 2005. She recently filed a petition for reinstatement and the Board of Professional Responsibility found that the petition was satisfactory. The Tennessee Supreme Court reinstated Jenkins to the practice of law on Feb. 8, retroactive to Feb. 1.

Sullivan County lawyer Howard Robert Clyde Orfield was today disbarred by the Tennessee Supreme Court. Prior to his disbarment, Orfield was suspended on Oct. 6, 2017, and had not been reinstated from this suspension. After accepting fee payments for representation in a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy case, Orfield ceased communicating with his client and failed to perform the services for which he was paid. Orfield later offered to refund the full balance of the fee paid by the client, but has not done so.

Blount County lawyer Kimberly Diane Russell was publicly censured today by the Supreme Court of Tennessee. The Board of Professional Responsibility filed a petition for discipline on May 23, 2018, concerning one complaint of misconduct. Russell, while administratively suspended for CLE non-compliance, accepted a flat fee to prepare divorce documents for pro se divorce. Russell prepared documents for the divorce and did not enter a written fee agreement for the non-refundable fee. Russell executed a conditional guilty plea acknowledging her misconduct violated Tennessee Rules of Professional Conduct.
