Bio:

Professor Joan Heminway brought nearly 15 years of transactional business law practice experience when she joined the faculty of the UT College of Law in 2000. She was an attorney in the Boston office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP from 1985 through 2000, working in the areas of public offerings, private placements, mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, and restructurings. She teaches primarily in the areas of business finance and governance, including business associations, corporate finance, and securities regulation. When possible, she also offers courses on matters relating to the law’s treatment of nonhuman animals, cross-border transactions, and lawyer leadership. She teaches business law to Professional MBA students at UT’s Haslam College of Business and leadership to honors undergraduate students on UT's Knoxville campus, has served as an expert witness and consultant on state business law issues and federal and state securities law matters, and is a frequent continuing legal education presenter on business law, law leadership, and lawyer wellness. She is a former chair of the Executive Committee of the TBA Business Law Section and the Corporate Law Committee of the Business Law Section of the Boston Bar Association. Professor Heminway also has represented clients pro bono on political asylum applications, landlord/tenant appeals, social security/disability cases, and not-for-profit incorporations and related business law issues. She is a registered yoga teacher (RYT 200) and a regular yoga and mindfulness practitioner.
