TBA Names Member Services Center for Former President and Springfield Lawyer Larry Wilks

Area honors memory of leader who made "serving lawyers every day" his theme

NASHVILLE, Jan. 23, 2012 — Nearly 100 lawyers, friends and family members gathered to dedicate the Larry Dean Wilks Member Services Center at the Tennessee Bar Center in Nashville last week.

Wilks, a former Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) president and Springfield lawyer, died Aug. 30, 2011. The Member Services Center provides office space, computer access and staff support for members who need a workspace while in downtown Nashville.

The TBA also unveiled the Tennessee Bar Association Leadership Law Larry D. Wilks Leadership Award, which will be presented to a member of the TBA Leadership Law class each year. Leadership Law, now in its ninth year, was spearheaded by Wilks and Nashville attorneys John Tarpley and Gail Vaughn Ashworth. It is designed to equip Tennessee lawyers with the vision, knowledge and skills necessary to serve as leaders in their profession and local communities. A new class is selected each year and spends six months learning about leadership in the legal profession, issues in the courts, policymaking in state government and the importance of community service.

Ashworth, one of 10 former TBA presidents in attendance, praised Wilks for his long-term support of the TBA, where he served in many capacities. "He was proud of the hats he wore," she said, "and he wore many." Members of Wilks' family and former law office staff also were in attendance.
