Bar Groups Host ‘Law Camp’ for Nashville Middle School Students

Three-day event introduces students to the legal system, careers in the law

NASHVILLE, March 24, 2015 — The Napier-Looby Bar Association (NLBA) and the Tennessee Youth Court Program are hosting 50 middle school students this week for a three-day Law Camp designed to introduce them to the legal system and careers in the law.

The camp includes sessions on how the legal system works, how to analyze legal issues and what it takes to become a lawyer. Local lawyers and judges will lead students through critical thinking exercises, writing and oral argument exercises. Participants also will visit the Nashville office of Butler Snow and sit in on a court proceeding before Tennessee Court of Appeals Judge Richard Dinkins. At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned during an oral advocacy competition.

This year’s Law Camp is being held at the Tennessee Bar Association in downtown Nashville. Transportation is being provided for participants each day between the bar center and the Martha O’Bryan Center. The camp runs Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Napier-Looby Bar Association (NLBA) is a nonprofit bar association dedicated to the advancement and development of black attorneys and preserving and honoring the legacy of minorities in the Nashville bar. The group also seeks to develop and nurture an interest in the legal profession among young people from underrepresented groups and to support their continued advancement in education, with the long-term goal of increasing diversity in law schools, on the bench and in the legal profession as a whole.
