Lowe, Yeager & Brown partner will lead association in 2016-2017

NASHVILLE, June 11, 2014 — Knoxville lawyer Jason H. Long has been elected vice president of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) and will be installed at the group's annual convention Friday in Gatlinburg.

After serving a year as vice president, Long will ascend to president-elect in 2015-2016 and then lead the association as president in 2016-2017. Building on the work of his predecessors, Long plans to focus on civics education, legislative relations and improving access to free legal services for those who cannot afford a lawyer.

Long is a partner with Lowe, Yeager & Brown and works primarily in the areas of professional malpractice defense and licensure issues, commercial litigation, general civil litigation and adoption law. He joined the firm in 2014. Long previously worked at Sheppeard & Swanson PLLC, where he handled domestic relations and municipal law, and London & Amburn PC, where he handled medical malpractice, health care and regulatory issues.  

Long graduated in 1996 from the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he served as chair of the Moot Court Board and two-time member of the National Moot Court Team. He received a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1993.

Long has been an active member of the TBA since 1998, serving in multiple roles, including as president of the Young Lawyers Division, East Tennessee Governor on the Board of Governors and chair of the board's Operations Committee. He received the President's Award in 2009 for his service as coordinator of the "Justice 4 All" statewide public service day project. Long currently serves on the TBA Public Education Committee and is chair of the Gavels Project. Most recently, he has been working with the TBA on the Informed Voters Project, an effort to educate voters on making informed decisions in the upcoming judicial elections. He was inducted into the Tennessee Bar Foundation in 2013.

Long also has been active in the local legal community, serving as the president of the Knoxville Bar Association (KBA) Barristers Division, as a member of the KBA Board of Governors and as current chair of the group's Membership Committee.  He is a fellow of the Knoxville Bar Foundation and writes a regular column titled "Long Winded" for DICTA, the KBA's monthly newsletter. Long also has worked as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Tennessee College of Law, teaching a legal writing course for first year students.

Taking office along with Long will be President Jonathan O. Steen of Jackson and President-Elect Bill Harbison of Nashville. Steen is a partner in the firm of Redding, Steen & Staton, where he practices general civil litigation, with a focus on medical malpractice, legal malpractice and products liability defense; commercial and business disputes; and appellate advocacy. Harbison is a member with Sherrard & Roe PLC and works primarily in the areas of corporate law, commercial litigation, general civil litigation, probate and trust law, and estate planning.

The 2014 Tennessee Bar Association Annual Convention will be held in conjunction with several other legal organizations, including the Tennessee Judicial Conference and the Tennessee Lawyers' Association for Women (TLAW). This joint meeting allows legal groups in the state to address common issues and concerns and offers opportunities for additional education, long-range planning, and recognition of attorneys who have performed outstanding legal work and community service.
