The Williamson Remembers Committee unveiled two historical markers in downtown Franklin on June 20 honoring six African American victims of lynchings in Williamson County during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. The markers also acknowledge the lynching of Jewish merchant, believed to be the first Jewish lynching victim in the United States, the Tennessean reports. The markers are part of a broader effort launched by the committee in 2020 to recognize the county's history of racial violence. Community leaders, historians and elected officials participated in the dedication ceremony. A third historical marker is planned outside Franklin City Hall once construction on that new building is complete.
