TBA Announces 2013 Law Day Contests

Students asked to depict the theme "equality for all" in artwork, essays

NASHVILLE, March 11, 2013 -- The Tennessee Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (TBA YLD) has announced the 2013 Law Day Art & Essay Contest, which gives students the opportunity to express their ideas about living in a society that is governed by the rule of law and achieve statewide recognition for their work.
 
The 2013 competition theme, "Realizing the Dream: Equality for All" challenges students to explore civil and human rights movements in America and the impact they have had in promoting the ideal of equality under the law. Students also are asked to consider what remains to be done to rectify injustice in society, including eliminating all forms of discrimination, putting an end to human trafficking and ending other violations of human rights. This theme is particularly timely given that this year marks the 150th anniversary of the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation.

The Law Day Art Contest is open to all Tennessee students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. The Essay Contest is open to students in grades 9 through 12. Teachers are encouraged to incorporate the contest into existing social studies or civics curriculum, or encourage students to submit entries on their own.

Each year, the TBA YLD holds a statewide art and essay contest in conjunction with Law Day - a national day set aside to celebrate the rule of law. Established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, Law Day provides an opportunity for young people to learn about the law and the American judicial system and an opportunity for lawyers to serve their communities. Law Day is celebrated across the nation on May 1.
