NASHVILLE, June 17, 2025 — Nashville lawyer John L. Farringer IV took office as vice president of the Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) last week during the group’s Annual Convention in Franklin. He was elected in February and will advance to the presidency in June 2027.

Past cases have involved securities, banking, contracts, real estate, land use, torts, civil rights and trade secret matters. He practices in state and federal courts at both the trial and appellate level and before administrative agencies. He also is experienced with all forms of alternative dispute resolution and is certified as a civil mediator.

Farringer has been active in the TBA for many years, including serving for six years as a member of the Board of Governors and as associate general counsel with a special focus on issues related to indigent representation. He was a member of the 2011 Leadership Law class and received the 2015 President’s Award for his work as chair of the Medical-Legal Partnership Working Group.

Farringer has made access to justice a passion of his career, including serving on the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission from 2018-2024, and chairing the commission from 2022-2024. He served as chair of the TBA’s Access to Justice Committee from 2014-2015 and received the TBA’s Harris Gilbert Pro Bono Award in 2012 for his work on behalf of Juana Villegas, an undocumented woman who was shackled during and after childbirth. Last week, he also received the TBA President’s Award for his efforts in support of a new indigent representation system for the state, which passed the state legislature in April and was signed into law by Gov. Bill Lee last month.

A native Tennessean, Farringer is active in the Nashville community, having served as a board member of the Economic Club of Nashville, The Family Center and the Richland-West End Neighborhood Association. He graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1999 and Vanderbilt University Law School in 2002.

Taking office along with Farringer were President Heidi Barcus of Lewis Thomason in Knoxville and President-elect Charlotte Knight Griffin of Eads. Lawyers from across the state gathered in Franklin last week for the TBA’s Annual Convention, which provides opportunities for continuing legal education, networking, and recognition of attorneys who have performed outstanding legal work and community service.
