In the Tennessee State Senate, 16 districts held primary elections yesterday. Highlights include two upsets: incumbent John Lundberg, R-Bristol, lost to challenger Bobby Harshbarger, R-Kingsport, in District 4, and Frank Niceley, R-Strawberry Plains, lost to challenger Jessie Seal, R-Claiborne County, in District 8. Harshbarger will face Independent Dalia Price of Rogersville in November; Seal will face Democrat R.E. Ellison of Seymour. Tennessee Lookout reports on these races. In the race to replace Sen. Art Swann, R-Maryville, who is not running for reelection, Tom Hatcher won the District 2 Republican primary against two challengers and will face Democrat Patti Young in the general election. Both candidates are from Maryville.

Incumbent Republicans Becky Massey of Knoxville, Todd Gardenhire of Chattanooga, Ken Yager of Kingston and Ferrell Haile of Gallatin won against primary challengers and will face Democratic opponents in November for District 6, 10, 12 and 18 respectively. Incumbents John Stevens, R-Huntingdon, of District 24, and Sara Kyle, D-Memphis, of District 30, won against challengers in their respective parties and are unopposed in the general election.

In the Tennessee House of Representatives, 17 incumbents held off primary challengers, including Robert Stevens, R-Smyrna, in District 13; Sam McKenzie, D-Knoxville, in District 15; Democrat Yusuf Hakeem of Chattanooga in District 28; Ron Travis, R-Dayton, in District 31; Tim Rudd, R-Murfreesboro, District 34; Paul Sherrell, R-Sparta, District 43; Nashville Democrat Bob Freeman in District 56; Scott Cepicky, R-Culleoka in District 64; Republican Jody Barrett of Dickson in District 69; Jackson Republican Chris Todd in District 73; Rusty Grills, R-Newbern, and Mary Littleton, R-Dickson, in Districts 77 and 78; Democrat Johnny Shaw of Bolivar in District 80; in Memphis, Democrats Joe Towns Jr., Justin J. Pearson; G.A. Hardaway in Districts 84, 86 and 93, and Republican John Gillespie in District 97. In District 96, Gabby Salinas beat four other Democratic challengers and will be unopposed in November. In District 4, Republican Renea Jones of Unicoi defeated Curt Alexander; in District 96, Gabby Salinas beat four other Democratic challengers. Both Jones and Salinas will be unopposed in November. In a crowded race in District 60, which covers Donelson, Hermitage and Old Hickory, Chad Bobo won the Republican primary against Christopher Huff, and Shaundelle Brooks won the Democratic primary over Tyler Brasher and John Parrish. Bobo and Brooks will face off in November to replace longtime Rep. Darren Jernigan, who did not seek reelection to serve in Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell’s administration, the Nashville Banner reports.

In District 27, Republican Patsy Hazelwood lost her primary reelection bid to Michele Reneau, both of Signal Mountain. Reneau will face Democrat Kathy Lennon of Red Bank. District 33 Rep. John Ragan, R-Oak Ridge, also lost his reelection bid to challenger Rick Scarbrough of Clinton, who will face Anne Backus, D-Oak Ridge.
