NASHVILLE, May 23, 2024 — Memphis lawyer Miles Mason will receive the prestigious Justice Joseph W. Henry Award for Outstanding Legal Writing on June 14 during the Tennessee Bar Association’s (TBA) Annual Convention in Memphis. The award, which will be presented at the Lawyers Luncheon, was established more than 40 years ago and is given each year to the lawyer who writes the most outstanding article published in the Tennessee Bar Journal for the preceding year. Mason’s father-in-law, the late Judge Joe B. Jones, was the first recipient of the award in 1981.

Mason is being recognized for his article “You Are the Father!: Untangling Custody Rights in Tennessee Between Unmarried Parents,” which appeared in the November/December 2023 issue of the Journal.

A Memphis native, Mason is the founder of Miles Mason Law Group PLC and a certified public accountant. He is a nationally recognized speaker who presents continuing education seminars across the country on divorce trial practice involving complex financial issues, forensic accounting and business valuation for judges, attorneys, CPAs and business valuation experts.

Mason is past chair of the TBA’s Family Law Section and a past member of the Tennessee Bar Journal Editorial Board. He is a member of the American, Tennessee and Memphis Bar Associations’ Family Law Sections, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Tennessee Society of CPAs.

The award is named for Joseph W. Henry, a former chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, who was known for his forthright and clear writing. The purpose of the award is to encourage practicing Tennessee lawyers to write scholarly yet practical articles that will be of maximum benefit to the members of the bar. The award is chosen by a committee made up of the chief justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court or their designee, deans of some of the state’s law schools or their designees — on a rotating basis — and the president of the TBA. This year, the judges were Tennessee Supreme Court Chief Justice Holly Kirby, University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys College of Law incoming Dean Jim Strickland and TBA President Jim Barry.

The Tennessee Bar Association (TBA) is the largest professional association in Tennessee with nearly 14,000 members. Founded in 1881, the TBA represents the entire spectrum of the legal profession in Tennessee and beyond and is dedicated to enhancing fellowship and professionalism among the members of Tennessee’s legal community.
